What a confusing article, ostensibly because the author chose to keep out some important bits.
There is zero recognition of what the fans have already done, in the creation of Bury AFC which now plays in the North West Counties Football League - Division 1 North. They are undefeated and bar for their six draws would be streets ahead (they are second currently, but with two games in hand). They currently play at Stainton Park in Radcliffe and average around 1300 per home game.
So, is there a suggestion now that there will be two Bury teams? Or, will Bury AFC be abandoned, a fan-based club, and the old Bury FC be re-created? Or, as suggested by BBC only, that the two may merge.
It looks to me that there are multiple supporters groups, "Est 1885" being the one who has made a move for Gigg Lane. I fear that these different groups may cause severe chasms between the supporters, those who are happy with the new Bury AFC and those who want the old Bury FC back. That would be sad for all. Trouble is that any new "old Bury FC" would have to commence playing at the bottom of the pyramid, like AFC and Macclesfield before them. Could or would they want to do that?
On a related note, that other club to suffer a similar demise, Macclesfield, are currently top of the NWCFL Premier Division with a game or two in hand. They average over 3000 per home game. |  |
