It’s like Groundhog Day isn’t it. Over the past decade we’ve taken every possible route to finishing 16th. We’ve had the start well and look like playoff contenders before the wheels come off route, the look like prime relegation candidates before a late surge of wins route, and this season the traditional win one, lose two, draw one mixed bag pattern with a sprinkling of thrashings thrown in. Different journeys, same boring ending. I don’t think we look balanced at all, and that’s been part of the problem for years. We’ve spent money on injury-prone centre-backs and attacking midfielders who don’t really score or assist even when they’re fit, while completely neglecting full-back, central midfield and goal keeper this season. The result is that we end up overplaying certain players because we don’t have adequate cover RND, Madsen, Burrell and Kone being obvious examples this season. At least they had a go at trying address the pace issue this season but it feels like a lot of money has been wasted on players we didn't really need. Just lazily signing players who did okay on loan here or have a agent we know, instead of doing some proper scouting and filling the massive gaps we have in key areas of the pitch. You’d think when they sit down to plan a squad the absolute bare minimum question would be: do we have at least two Championship level players for every position? Yet we never seem to manage it. We don’t even have one championship level left-back that we actually own. Not much we can do about it though really is there, other than hope our young CEO who is clearly learning on the job develops into a proper Championship CEO/DoF eventually. Maybe we can loan him out to a L1 club for a bit and bring him back in a year or two to see if hes developed? [Post edited 11 Mar 9:51]

For me its hiring Steve Gallen as DoF. A guy with decades of experience of coaching, scouting and player recruitment in the English football league. We've gone with the kid with the laptop. It still annoys me we didn't go for him after Les left. [Post edited 7 Mar 23:34]

I do appreciate the article as it does give some insight into the thinking and reasoning for signing and selling particular players. The line that made me laugh/cry though was 'in a position of increasing global market demand as a left-back.' to justify Pullella's signing. I find that comment a bit ridiculous. Its just as bad as when Les used to say we can't sign any strikers because they all cost the earth (two examples in our team in Burrell and Kone proving that wrong this year) so we cant have any or in this case we've had to go to Oz to get one who is only a teenager. There are LB's out there in our price range, a good deal closer than Australia and they're surely in no more or less 'global demand' than any other position on the pitch?! It annoys me every time the FB position is mentioned by someone at the club. Because our RB situation isn't much better. We're doing well to be high as we are with basically one half fit LB at the club (who isn't our player) and 2 or 3 makeshift options at RB in Mbengue, Edwards and Dunne. Its a seemingly neglected position in pretty much every transfer window and I cant see us ever reaching the playoffs until its addressed properly. [Post edited 3 Feb 13:16]

Maybe there's a replacement lined up if Field goes to Norwich. I don't really want Sam to leave, but he doesn't really play that much anymore and if Norwich are giving us a chunky loan fee with some sort of agreement that it goes permanent if he plays x amount of games for 4 or 5 mil then its probably good business and allows to sign a replacement in the summer. Definitely sad to see him leave though I think he's been a brilliant player for us. |

''You've got to take care of the football Nick'' They certainly earnt their money last night! A very tricky one to commentate on! |

I watched it on Sky last night and what I did find funny and depressing in equal measure was the producer for the game was clearly keen to show a lot replays of the action, but as there was so little to show they just ended up showing replays of all the awful play that was happening like we needed to see it again just to really show bad it was! There was one of the Oxford GK in the first half just kicking the ball out of play with the Scottish co-comm just saying 'At least he had the right idea' over it. Then in the 2nd half I think they showed Madsen f*cking up a 10 yard pass by playing out of play for a throw to Oxford right in front of our fans. Scottish co-comm 'He needed to take a little bit more care there'. What a bleak match. |

I was really pleased for him yesterday. He showed good character to bounce back from some shaky performances at the start of the season. I think a lot of that was possibly down to those short goal kick routines and playing around our own pen box for 20 passes which he clearly didn't need or feel comfortable with. Looked a bit flappy on corners in the first half but I thought he grew in confidence with that side of things as the game went on and obviously made 2 or 3 great shot stopping saves during the game. I wonder if he'll get a run again now. |

Very good performance. Full of guts and determination against a side with more ability and depth. That has to be the bar for cup competition performances and team selections going forward now, stick it up on the fridge and tell all future managers and players that's where it needs to be. Whether it be West Ham away in front of 9000 away fans or Barnet at home in front of three open stands. Yesterday was probably the most effort I've seen us put into a FA cup game in my adult life and I'm almost 40 now! [Post edited 12 Jan 10:05]

Wow! I didn't see us doing a permanent deal for him. Amazing news. |

If Nuno's still in charge by Saturday I cant see him picking a weakened team, as he's fighting to hang on to his job so every game is important to him. If he's sacked this week though then they might pick some more kids with a temp manager in charge with nothing to lose. It'll be hard game for us regardless. Hopefully they'll give our supporters going to the game a decent showing though. Its about time we did something in a cup other than embarrass us fans. Other than the injuries we have, there's no reason not to give it a really good go and pick as strong as a 11 as we have. The 'we need to focus on the league' excuse we've had for the past 2 seasons whilst we've been in relegation battles just isn't valid this season with not much chance of going up or down. |

Awful performance and a awful game. The fact the norwich keeper was time wasting from about 25 mins onwards (whilst it was 0-0) says it all really. They barely had to do anything to win the game. They should be ashamed of themselves really after that, it was a pahetic effort. We must be one of the few teams in the league who dread sheff wed at home because we're a sh&t favourite. Sorry if this has been covered already but does anyone know how Morgan came to be just in his pants at one point during the goal celebrations?! I was jumping around the living room and I saw the shirt go but then Sky Sports cut away then when they cut back to him his was just in his budgie smugglers! Absolute scenes. |

I was at the game today. Interesting to say the least I reckon . I think it was a beautiful sumerisation of our season so far tbh. Sh*t start deservedly behind. Then a bit of hope then sh*t again. Then we get on top again which is hopefully where our season is going. It was a strange one! Im not really sure we played well though did we? [Post edited 22 Nov 2025 21:40]

I don't blame him. I thought he was having a pretty good game, especially defensively. Dembele came on and totally lost Scienza for the 2nd goal within 10 mins of coming on. Hopefully Smyth did calm down and come back. |

I'm not sure you need to be quick to be a prem striker if your over 6 foot and really strong and powerful like he is. There's a lot of other areas he needs to develop though if he wants to get there. But he's only 22 and he's got time. Hopefully he'll be a mythical 20+ goal EFL striker for us first! I'm also hoping the Ivory Coast are stacked with strikers and that he doesn't get called up for the AFCON in Dec/Jan! |
