I'm not sure about that. It was held there in 1994, without really having a major impact. What a disgrace that it will have been there twice in just over 30 years but only once here. Tells you all you need to know about FIFA. [Post edited 7 May 21:41]

Growing up in sarf Essex during the 60's and 70's, my first experience of watching professional football was at Roots Hall. As a 9 or 10 year old, the floodlit matches on Friday evenings were a magical experience. The only game I remember clearly was their very creditable 0-0 draw against Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup in January 1979. The old South Bank was amazing that night. I also played a youth cup final at Roots Hall in 1976, which we won. The pitch seemed as big as Wembley. So some happy memories, and I did feel sad when they went out of the EFL. I'd love to see them back and to experience a game against them at the JCS. Two Essex clubs in the EFL is a good thing. |

Defensively, we look well set if we hold on to the same players and Macey. Midfield also looks good, with Payne and Bishop the fulcrum. We will need a ball winner to replace McDonnell (obvs). Up front, we have some challenges - Taylor had an amazing season for the most part, but his age started to show toward the business end of the season, and his recent injury casts further doubts. Tovide has frustrated and amazed in equal measure, but for a young player his injury record is terrible. We need to sign a proven goalscorer who still has a bit of time ahead in their career. |

Yep, it summed it up perfectly - getting to the byline on numerous occasions but no one to finish it off. So much better than last season but too many missed opportunities. Have we seen the last of Taylor? Will Tovide move on? It will be an interesting summer window, that's for sure.

There are people on this forum who know the longer history, but over the last season and a half I think our record on in-game penalties isn't good. Read had to wait an age and his nerves showed with a terrible connection. Everyone in the East Stand was on their feet before it was taken - huge pressure. Edwards was much better in the second half and, apart from the obvious fact of facing 10 men, I wondered if the pitch is slightly better on the East Side? The ball seemed to bobble a lot as he received it in the first half. I know Simpson has been criticised but Tovide was also poor. He needs to curb some of his antics. |

Notts County should be on our radar now. Last night they seemed to lack self belief and energy. Looked like they were running on empty. I'm hoping that Bishop might feature today, maybe from the bench. |

YPOTS - McDonnell. Astonishing energy and commitment to the cause. Maturity beyond his years.
Goal of the Season - Tovide v Port Vale, the sort of goal that only he can conjure up, almost from nothing. An ice cool finish. |

In today's programme, DC gave an interesting explanation of why he is so keen to improve the pitch for next season. Any chance the owner will stump up the cash for a GrassMaster surface? If Tranmere can afford one, then maybe we can, not that it's done them any good this season! |
