 | News Comment | Southampton V Coventry City The Verdict at 11:44:12
In terms of preparation, their goalkeeper was known to be a great stopper and proved it throughout the game. Therefore, it was either going to take something special to beat him, or more intelligent play. Scienza was through on goal and his shot from within the 6 yard box had liittle chance of beating him, while a simple ball the Armstrong should have made it 1-0. Again, later in the match, Armstrong rather typically scuffed a shot straight at the keeper. Our strikers need to be coached to make more of these chances, no least when a team is defending so deep and doggedly! Conversion rates have been poor for a very long time. |

With Fellows out, once Norwich had removed the Scienza threat by kicking the sh*t out of him at every opportunity, Saints went back into their Russell Martin 'shell' and it was a pretty sorry show as time went on! |

To me it is simply 40% Will Small and 40% the players that he has inherited and in some cases brought it and 20% the coaches. I am struggling to find the opposite of 'clinical' but that is where we are with strikers. Wasteful will do. They are frustrating to watch. You know they are going to either mess up the opportunity, hoof it wide/over the bar, or as so often happens, give the keeper an easy one to save, as shot straight at him! Do the coaches not see that? It has been like it for ages, by and large! So they get my 20% blame. That said, the manager is supposed to bring something to the game during the 90 minutes and mostly Will Small has messed up winning opportunities IMHO, with his ridiculous substitutions and lack of tactical nowse! |

Agree with Bowlercow. It is one thing when your goalkeeper is man of the match against a high flying opponent. It is quite another, when against a relatively lowly team. We certainly look to have paper thin confidence and once pricked, we become very porous at the back!! Once Downs comes on it is almost like playing with 10 men. You feel that Still is determined to prove that the right decision was made to sign him. Currently, he is a Div 2 striker at best! Agree with others that Robinson should have been given the chance to come on, with plenty of time to make an impact. |

Can't argue with bigbadBarry's comments. Let's just hope that at 1 minute past 2pm, we aren't scrathing our heads at the starting eleven!! Hope that McCarthy and back 5 start again and that the goal keeping coach has instilled in McCarthy to put it into Row Z, if he comes under pressure and is in doubt! |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Liverpool The Verdict at 13:27:10
Lots of positives from the match, already well covered above. From my position, that 11 by and large, turned up, worked hard right until the end and showed so ambitions. I would reward them by keeping the 11 virtually unchanged, apart from maybe Robinson for Archer. Plus of course Downs, well and truly left on the training ground, to prove has something to offer, which I doubt he does!! |
 | News Comment | Adam Armstrong Leaves For West Bromwich Albion On Loan at 17:30:44
Agree with Monksway. It should be good for his confidence to build up a goal tally ahead of next season, in the Championship, where he is a very effective player. Sadly, not quite there in the Premier League. Constantly being subbed and/or missing half chances in the Premier League won't serve him or Saints well! |
 | News Comment | Who Is Southampton Caretaker Manager Simon Rusk at 11:06:36
I put this comment onto the other thread but more appropriate here: They should have made Jo Tessem the Interim Manager, supported by Fanny Benali. Jo sees all the problems, almost before they develop and Franny won't let them get away with a half hearted display! |

The question now is "Will SR want a Manager who tells them the home truths". That we don't have a bad team.....for The Championship but are seriously weak for the PL. You only have to look at the likes of Adam Armstrong. Thrives in the Championship and has failed to be an effective striker twice at PL level. Be very surprised to get an stablished name in charge but will live in hope! |
 | News Comment | Is Russel Martin’s Priority Southampton FC Or His Own Agenda at 09:18:14
Well as is said the definition of Madness is continuing to do the same thing time and again unexpecting a different outcome stop. Certainly an interesting piece, Nick. If this were true of course it also potentially gives SR the benefit of saying they believed in his strategy and the damage has now been done, so there is no point in throwing good money after bad in January. For this theory to work the manager also has to have an exit strategy before any damage to his reputation is done, as you say. There is very little jeopardy for a modern-day manager as their contracts are unreal compared to pretty much everybody else in society. Failure is rewarded as much as success. Where is the incentive to succeed??? All theory of course. |

Nice analogy Cotswoldsaint but you might have to hope that something happens to their horse, as ours only appears to have 3 legs and a jockey facing in the wrong direction! |
 | News Comment | Should Russell Martin Put Out Another Reserve Side For Leeds United Trip at 14:04:43
I say, go for a strong team and make the players reallise they have to up their game now ahead of the play-offs. If RM thinks he can get away with sending out a side like Botley FC, then think they will be Barcelona next match, he is even more deluded than I had thought!!! |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict at 13:37:00
So many good comments above. I for one must eat 'humble pie' as I thought early season, that RM was leading us to disaster but 'hey ho' what do I know!! Excellent point by WestSussexSaint. We really did seem like we had lost that control of midfield without Romeu but Downes has now taken on that mantle admirably. Good to see Smallbone being so positive and as many will know, Jo Tessem had him down as MOTM, probably as he had maligned him (deservedly at times) in so many previous moments in games. Simple truth is that from Front to Back, we look good. Bazuna looks so much better than earlier in the season, no doubt drawing confidence from have Bednarek and Harwood-Bellis in front of him, doing a good impersonation of 'Lundekvam and Svensen', from some good old days. The team spirit is great to see. One player scores and the whole team is happy for him. Not the often seem Prem League attitude of 'me, me, me'. I really can't see why Adams would want to leave for a bit-part in some other camp, that he might well hate, apart from a few more pounds in the bank!! |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Walsall The Verdict at 13:05:26
Firstly, great to go through to the next round and good to see a team with 9 changes gel together well. Your comment above has two key points Dirk Doone, firstly Saints are indeed fortunate to have someone playing such positive, decisive football, in Ryan Fraser. Secondly though, I just wonder how many chances Saints can waste and still hope to be where they want to be at the end of the Season. Mara (his well taken goal apart) and Smallbone, for example, were in prime positions several times and their finishes were pretty poor. Maybe it is a personal lack of belief but scuffed shots, either straight at the keeper of indeed 'off target' seemed to stack up. It does make you wonder how many goals someone like Ings could have put away yesterday. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Come Through December Period Strong & Getting Stronger at 13:42:29
I agree with underweststand. Listened to the Radio Solent coverage of the Norwich game. By early in thye scond half, so many chances had been wasted that I thought I would check the BBc stats. We had had 12 attempts on goal but only 1 on target!! All that effort and energy in the build up gone to waste. Great that we can create chances but until we get a striker or two that worry the opposition, Saints are making themselves relatively easy to play against, which in spite of our impressive record, is why so many games have felt like they are needlessly on a knife edge!! |
 | News Comment | Russell Martin Admits He Will Need To Rotate His Squad On Saturday at 09:50:59
It may be necessary to 'tweak' a team that seems to be starting to gel together but please don't change the back five. Yes, I know that includes Manning but he is currently our least worst choice at left back and will also benefit from continuity in defence. It will also give Bednarek the chance to organise things during the 9o minutes, without worrying about communication breakdowns and people bedding in, yet again. Not beating Rotherham would look like a serious banana skin!!! |
 | News Comment | Southampton Team To Play Middlesbrough Now Out at 07:52:53
I have to agree, Boris1977 and others. The only thing that is looking healthy at the Club if their Profit and Loss Spreadsheet, no doubt! However, more simple maths says that SR + RM = DISASTER! So many things wrong and can't see Martin putting any of it right going forward. |
