Le Shrugs thoughts post Plymouth stuffing.
at 08:38 13 Aug 2025

Looking at the starting line-up against Preston and the injury situation, I can understand we are in a dire position and could not go flat-out for this game.

But I am bitterly disappointed with that selection. This is not the way to develop young players imho. You do that by putting them next to experienced guys who can coach and guide them through a game. On field coaching. I doubt they would have learned much from this.

As Mbengue said in his interview, 3-game weeks is their job, so at least 3 or 4 more senior players could have played a bit-part role here. In hindsight, a Colback, Cook and Field in the 2nd half to see the lads through would have been invaluable learning experience and I think we might have pulled it off.

A big mark of disapproval from me.

Perhaps Celar then staying after all, which means we have (hopefully) Kone, Burrell, Frey and Celar competing for 1 spot. Not sure Kolli is an out-and-out striker, but throw him in the mix anyway. That seems like more than enough options, even allowing for 2 or 3 out injured.

Could always try a dev squadder in case of emergency, but signing a striker who has injury concerns already and discarded after only 6 months by his current club sounds like a red flag to me.

How is that one coming along?

With half the dev squad reportedly in Plymouth, what sort of team did we field?

Hope Harvey Vale gets a start, I feel he has been under utilized in pre-season. Keen to see more of him.

If our injury list isn't bad enough, we now sign player who fail medicals.

As a matter of interest, I assume "failing a medical" can mean a number of things? I remember Ajax's Kanu being diagnosed with a heart condition during one of those, but perhaps it could simply mean "not match fit" ? Or failed a drugs test?

And I asume one's club medical is not the same as the other's.

Someone with more knowledge help me out here.

Where does Kone rank of the pace-o-meter? Kelman never struck me as particularly fast and able to outsprint a defence. Kone? Because a lot of our signings (attack especially) seems to be focussed on injected pace.

I see Harrison Ashby has been getting some game time at Newcastle in preseason. Even started against Atletico Madrid.

I liked the look of him, although very naive at times and short of experience.

Best part of this interview was his response to the 3-game weeks: “its tough, but its our job”. Love that attitude.

Should have put a winky there.

All in all, "only" 5 injured (Paul Smyth also out, I missed that in the original report.) which normally is ok, but for a season start not good and some keys names in that group.

It does mean Celar is fit, so unless they are keeping info from us (they wouldn't, would they?) there is something else brewing if he is not in the match-day squad.

Akpom was absolutely woeful while at Ajax. Clearly a level (or two) above his capabilities. Will probably do well at BCFC.

He was one of the Mislintat buys that almost ruined Ajax and will take a couple of years to recover from. They spent I think 110m euros on absolute crap players and now they (a) are short of quality to compete at the levels they are used too, (b) don't have money left to find better replacements and (c) are stuck with these palookas on long expensive contracts. Trying to offload whoever they can for whatever they can get.

They tried a QPR there.

I took my daughter to her very first Ajax game at that time, the big home clash vs Feyenoord. Game was abandoned after crowd through stuff on te pitch in protest and Mislintat was fired soon after.

Burton’s Burrell added out of the blue – Signing
at 22:18 27 Jul 2025

Of course they will never come out and admit it outright, but silently the club is rectifying many of the mistakes made a year ago. Injecting pace, signing players used to 3 games a week, fans allowed on pre-season… I like it a lot.

Selling Kelman now for good money and not letting him run down his contract (or worse, get injured) another learning from the past.

I’m confident LB and CDM will be addressed shortly.

Then we only have the undisclosed contract length to moan about.

As much as I believe there is excellent value in signing good African players, my main objection is the 6 odd weeks these guys are out in Jan/Feb on AFCON duty, usually a time the squad is running on fumes injury wise. So Ba coming with a few ifs and buts for me, apart from his stats not blowing me away either. odd one that.

would really have like to see Kelman given a go, but I assume the contract situation is making a sale unavoidable.

As a born and raised South African, very happy to see we signed a lad from there. And from Stellenbosch also, where I studied and worked for a while.

I would guess both Fox and Colback offerred new deals, but on lower wages, and they are testing the waters elsewhere.

They would have to hope a Stoke of BCFC comes in with a silly offer for a 1-year deal as cover for some position, but otherwise I'm guessing neither will get a (much) better deal elsewhere than what we probably offer.

Both had bitpart roles last season and wrong side of 30, so long-term and/or big money moves not very likely for either.

Good prospect, deserves some minutes this season, but fully agree we need another man at LB. Let's not forget that Larkeche was out injured for a lengthy spell last season. Vale also just back from long and serious injury, so looks like a pretty big gamble if we don't have another LB coming in.

I would be surprised if Zan Celar is an ESC, being a full international and all. I would much rather have thought Paul Nardi to fall in that category. Not anymore, since he played enough bames, but to get in initially.
