Hmmm, football legend - absolutely. The right 'profile' for the club, maybe less so as far as I'm concerned, but if he's the public face of a more wealthy consortium behind him, let's see.
Oh this is such tragic news. Never mind seeing him at his prime on the pitch, I had the pleasure of meeting Nicky many times in his football policing role, and he was always great company and a wonderful copper for the Essex Constabulary Col U football squad. I asked one of them at Brizzle earlier this season how he was getting on, and whilst he didn't betray any confidences, he didn't sound too positive.
Back will return to Wycombe, let's face it he's not exactly a challenger for the squad, never mind the starting XI. I would like to think all of the remaining three would be options we'd be interested in, but I suspect it'll depend on the fortunes of their parent clubs. I accept he's taken a while to develop here, but Goodwin more recently has been putting in some very good performances for the U's. However, if Oxford are relegated, I'd imagine they'll want to keep him for League 1 football next season.
Barbrook would be absolutely nailed-on for me, but it would probably rely on the unpalatable truth that it would be dependent on Ipshit getting promotion to the Premier League. Similarly, I'd like to sign Akachukwu, but if Southampton don't get promoted to the PL, they'll probably keep him to loan out to a League 1 side next season.
A few interesting results across the league this weekend to review.
At the bottom Newport gave their hopes of survival a huge boost, beating bottom club Harrogate 2-1 at Rodney Parade. That victory leaves Harrogate and Barrow, who lost a tight game 3-2 at Barnet, four points adrift of safety, both on 33 points. The three others still in the mix are the aforementioned Newport, along with Crawley and Tranmere, who are all on 37 points.
On the beach From Fleetwood in 14th down to Cheltenham in 19th, none can now mathematically be relegated or make the play-offs. However, despite the perceived wisdom that clubs with nothing to play for don't put the effort in, four of the six won today, one drew and only Accrington Stanley lost. That was against one of the other six, 1-2 at home to Fleetwood Town courtesy of an injury-time winner for the Cod Army.
At the top Bromley missed out on being the first side to guarantee promotion (for now), losing 2-1 at second place MK Dons. Cambridge in third place kept up the pressure, thumping Notts County 4-0 at the Abbey, and that despite having their keeper red-carded before half-time. The current play-off placed teams had a weekend to forget, with both Notts County and of course Swindon losing heavily, Salford could only draw 0-0 at home against Gillingham, and Chesterfield blew their chance put some space between them and the chasing pack, surprisingly only managing a 1-1 home draw against Tranmere.
Hope springs eternal That leaves Grimsby in 8th down to the U's in 13th still in with a mathematical chance of making the play-offs. With their game in hand, Grimsby do still have a very distant chance of crashing the automatic promotion party, but for the rest, it's the play-offs or nothing. After our win on Friday, only Grimsby and Barnet made any headway this afternoon, both winning very tight games. Crewe (against Grimsby), Oldham and Walsall all lost, the latter very heavily, 4-0 at home to Cheltenham Town.
Next up Tuesday night will see a few of the games in hand resolved. Barrow are at home, fighting for their lives against an Oldham Athletic side that need the points just as much at the top. Cheltenham play Gillingham in a match that means nothing but pride for either side. The crunch game will be Chesterfield at home to Grimsby - a Spireites win would leave any hope of the play-offs for the U's relying on goal difference, a win for Grimsby would be nearly as damaging, so our hopes must rest with a draw. However, if we don't beat Accrington Stanley, and realistically beat them well, that will be our faintest of play-off dreams gone for the season. More on that later in my revitalised match preview to come...
Indeed, dropped into the relegation zone by Wet Spam of all teams - Danny apparently enjoyed that one almost as much as our result.
Incidentally, the players out of contract and loans expiring on Graeson's excellent webpage https://www.coludata.co.uk/u-s makes grim reading come the summer bring-and-buy fire sale...
Yes, there is an element of frustration. Last night confirmed that on our day we’re one of the best teams in the league, but we just haven’t been consistent enough. Yes, I can point to a catalogue of injuries, appalling officials, and not enough strength in depth because of the reduced budget, but we’re not on our own for some or all of the above.
But, it is still worth celebrating an excellent performance even if tinged with regret we haven’t been that good often enough. I still have goals for the season, the first being match or better last season’s 67pts in 10th place. My big goal is obviously straight wins to the end of the season, though I’m well aware even that won’t be enough for the play-offs. I doubt it’ll make any difference regarding our out of contract players though. Other clubs will already know who they’ll be interested in, it’ll be the same ones we want to keep - the last few games won’t make any difference to that.
Just a sublime performance from the U's, nothing more than we deserved, and to be frank, quite comfortable against a team playing for the automatic promotion places. 3-0, but it could have been more if I'm honest. I'm looking forward to Ollie's post-match interview.
Excellent first half from the U's, just no goal for our dominance despite hitting the woodwork twice. Swindon sitting back since the red card, which is making things much harder to create real opportunities, but I worry it's still 0-0 against ten man.
Nice one ghughes! We have Copilot at work, and normally it’s considerably more reliable than your experience. Outside of Jack and Ellis, the first name I thought of without AI was Jamie Cureton, but I bet there are many more.
You might not want to invest nearly half an hour of your life in this Holloway pre-match interview, but there’s something for everyone here, even his frank views on academies.
Btw - I’m not certain if he’s being tongue-in-cheek about our big wide pitch, or he’s forgotten ours must be one of the narrowest these days?
Those figures also show the gamble Robbie played by not selling Lisbie and Tovide in the summer. That September 25 figure would have been massive if he had.
Fair enough, it's all about opinions after all, but I will give Macey credit for less wayward kicks and more bowling it out to keep the impetus going. Hope your journey home is going well?
