Vale was a disaster. The boy played like his laces were tied together. Control the ball, pass it. Couldn’t manage that. The lad has potential and probably wasn’t expecting to get thrown into the mixer. And yes, I have seen some shite in my time, supported this lot for 40 + years. Not hyperbole, just lamenting yet another league two standard performance to go with the many others our lot are capable of. There has been improvement this season, but we are still a long way from a strong, consistent and professional outfit that we once were. It was a poor performance whichever way you look at it, selection and fatigue probably played a big part in it, but boy, it was a painfully frustrating watch and confirms my belief that we are unlikely to trouble the play offs. No big deal, no expectation we would. We move on…..no shitting the bed here. |

I’ve seen plenty of lamentable, lame performances that lacked any desire or effort on our part, but this was definitely more about our inability to do anything positive or with quality. Varane, Saito, Kone couldn’t win a header, win a tackle, pass the ball or beat a man all night. Poku offered next to nothing, although in fairness it was his first start. Vale typified the performance of the team in general. Every touch was a disaster. Never seen a performance like it IMO. Amateur hour. |

This was different. The effort was in evidence, it was the lack of quality, passing, control, decision making across the entire team, throughout, particularly, the second half. I was gobsmocked by just how poor the standard of basic footballing standards were. It looked like they were playing under the influence of magic mushrooms. Utterly bizarre. |

He’s actually played in about 6 of those 50 appearances. The other 44 he was just a spectator. Fail to see what he contributes that Field doesn’t. |

You can question the tinkering, changes and formation all day long, it’s the players that have to perform. League two standard football from all but Dunne and Morrisson. The lack of quality was mind boggling. Horrible performance. |

I get what you’re saying Paddy and this season has been infinitely better than many before it. However, what does budget availability have to do with phoning it in against Pompey in that first half? Mentality is the issue, regardless of whether you’re a million pound signing or a 100 million pound signing. Effort and application should come as standard. You pay for levels of ability. JS has stated that the first half was unacceptable. He was correct. His job is now to rid this club and squad of the single biggest impediment to our progress. Apathy. Most supporters can accept losing games with grace, providing the team has shown intent and effort to try and win the game. We just rolled over in that first half and let Dozzell, of all people, take the piss and dominate midfield. He must have thought all his Christmases had come at once and I bet the Pompey supporters thought “is this the team that gave Leicester a shellacking last week”? Same players, different attitude (with one notable exception). Until a rollicking at half time woke them from their stupor. |

I have no doubt they got the hair dryer treatment at half time, but find it odd that our captain was the only one up for it in that first half, but failed to berate any of his fellow team mates, despite them clearly showing no spirit or endeavour. Personally, as the captain, I would have been chewing a few ears during that first half and not be satisfied waiting until half time for the manager to do it. |

When you have Dozzell bossing the game from the centre circle unencumbered, your game plan is simply not working. Pompey looked good because we gave them the freedom and space to do whatever they liked. Our passive approach was mind boggling. We can’t boss a game for 90 mins, but we have to show more grit and determination than that entire first half. Varane never appears to move out of second gear to me. |

What I find most frustrating and which JS mentioned yet again yesterday in his post match, is the lack of intensity in the first half, and this runs across the entire team. We were playing so deep with little or no press, simply allowing their keeper to come out with the ball 10 yards outside of his own penalty box, time after time. My 23 year old ( Man City supporting) son came round to watch the game with me but left at half time, utterly stupefied by the performance, particularly having watched the Leicester game last week. These tap on, tap off performances are our Achilles heel, although this lack of consistency runs throughout the Championship and is not confined to us alone. To make real progress, JS needs to find the answers to what in truth, is the holy grail of successful football teams. Consistency.and mental fortitude. |

The wait to see them together in this team seems to be taking an eternity. Agree that when both are up to speed, Saito and Dembele will be benched. Both poor today, although Dembele improved in the second half. |

Cannot believe how utterly abject and disinterested we look. Even worse than Leicester did last week. Changes absolutely needed. If JS wasn’t disgusted by that, he never will be. Embarrassing. |

Harsh Stainrod. Football managers don’t need to be rocket scientist smart, it’s honesty, transparency and emotional connection that inspires people. Inspired, motivated footballers perform at their best and that is what we are seeing. The fact that the players pushed JS forward in front of the fans after the Leicester win speaks volumes for the collective belief and respect for him as their manager. Contrast that to Leicester and Marti. Fancy tactics and dissection of every detail and decision is pointless. Hard work, team ethic and moments of quality win the day. |

Great report as always. “Mentality Monsters”. This. The shift from typical QPR and all those miserable stats that hang over us lies squarely at a weak mentality. We know we have the quality and squad depth this season, but can we finally get the monkey of our back and show some mental strength in games like today? Evidence suggests that we are making progress in this regard, although we do seem to keep saying “the next game” will show how much progress we have really made. Will a win today finally be the turning point that convinces one and all that we have finally stepped across the threshold and into a new era of being a serious football club, that is well managed, with genuine aspirations of making real progress as opposed to showing the occasional flash of brilliance before returning to our mean? Can’t wait to find out. Again. All the best for the New Year everyone, let’s hope all this promise is fulfilled, I’m sure we could all do with a year filled with joy and optimism. |

We have yet to see our two best wingers, Poku and Chair, play together in any meaningful way. Look forward to seeing what improvement this might bring. |

We are in a season of transition, development and learning, particularly for JS. We certainly appear too good for relegation, so we use this season to bed in the existing players and manager and review the situation in the summer. Buying and selling decisions to be made then, with a view to strengthening the team and having a real go next season following a strong preseason and a better understanding from the manager of what will be required. Leave any available funds in the bank….for now at least. |

Think that was on Poku. He was stood centrally on the edge of the box and ball watching. I’m sure I saw JS giving him a roasting about it after the full time whistle. Did like the look of Poku when he came on however, looks significantly stronger than Saito and Dembele. Hope he gets more minutes against Middlesbrough. |

You have all had too much mulled wine me thinks. Maja is fit and available (you know, the one who scored a hat trick here last time) and after last week, our charitable status within the league clearly remains fully intact. 1-1, will suffice. |

We all know what to expect from West Brom, another team that bullies us into submission every season, but will JS and his staff be fully aware of what they are facing. Unless we change our line up and add a bit of physicality, another humbling is on the cards. Field now likely injured, but Hayden and RND must start. Varane and Saito need to sit this one out. |
