Modicums of comfort

Back to back clean sheets for Walsh. Not exactly peppered with shots in either game, but still made some important saves.
Reached 40 Points, which is more of a psychological thing. I tend to judge the season in ‘10’s’. 0-10.11-20 etc. In an ideal world you move onto the next ‘10’ after four games. We moved onto 31 after that epic last minute winner v Brum, NINE league games ago. So just a relief to get to 40.

It could be one of those free flowing, high octane matches that we dreamed about at the beginning of the season, or…

Or the club crest. Sure beats ‘Arte et labore’, which doesn’t seem to be working particularly well at the moment.

Or the 0-0 draw with Russia in Moscow, Noel, which must have been Dunne’s single most outstanding performance. What made it even more iconic, was when he had to change his shirt as it had blood on it. We hadn’t brought a replacement No5 shirt with us to Moscow (who’d have thunk it, Roy) so the coach had to use a permanent marker to draw a number 5 on his back. Sponsor be damned!

St Oke Methodist Church Away Match Fred
at 23:47 17 Jan 2026

I was fortunate enough not to have watched this one as I was otherwise occupied. But from the outside looking in, it seemed very similar to Sheffield United away (maybe it’s the kit) when the sole height of our ambition was not to lose. Some mitigating circumstances here, with our injury list and Stoke having a much better season than SU, but it must still be soul-destroying to pay to go and see. Sound like very typical mid-table fare.
Footnote - pleased for Walsh with a clean sheet

Playing 11 a side football
at 20:55 15 Jan 2026

Played a charity match 15 odd years ago when I was in my mid-forties. Our coach happened to be the same guy who had coached me at under age, 30 years previous. He watched me ‘run’ down the wing and shouted after me “well at least you haven’t lost any pace - you were slow thirty years ago and you’re still slow.”

Morrison going out on loan
at 20:20 13 Jan 2026

The age thing is a good point. A lot of CB’s reach their peak between 27-30 as long as they stay injury free. I haven’t rated Morrison as highly as others on here -his concentration levels are very suspect. But a decent level L1 loan, should help his development no end.

Excellent reflection as always, Clive. I was completely wrong about the team selection. I was sure it would be stiffs v kids. Whether that was the right choice after losing Saito is another matter - reminds me of playing Jamie Mackie against ….Blackburn I think. But I am glad for you guys, you all deserved a proper day out and it sounds like you got one. The official attendance might be 9000, I wonder what the ‘unofficial ‘ attendance was?

Who Knew Walsh Was So Good?
at 22:50 11 Jan 2026

This exactly. I have wanted Walsh as our number one and felt his wrist injury, which some described as ‘convenient’, couldn’t have happened at a worse time. If you fall off a horse, you don’t want to wait nearly six months to get back up again - Walsh would have wanted to put the Coventry game behind him as quickly as possible and instead was stuck in limbo through no fault of his own.
Should play every game for the remainder of the season. Then next season, if we are to have a serious tilt at the play-offs, he will have 30 odd Chamipionship games under his belt. Mahoney should be his number two and pushing him all the way - that is how you get better.

RND - Whats occurring ??
at 23:35 9 Jan 2026

If he was a stand out defender then he would stand out in an average QPR defence, but in fact he blends right in. Rinsed by the better wingers - of which there are very few - in a very average league. Having said that, he has been vital to us this season, but that is largely due to the paucity of options. He should benefit from having Edward’s to his right, but keep for season and sort out lb in the summer.
