A period of mourning for many, I suspect.

Very interesting points raised Nix. Just re-Colback, I think if you take away his 'playing on the edge' mentality then he becomes highly ineffective. This has been the case throughout his career. I'm not much of a man for stats, but I know without checking that he has been sent off numerous times and as for yellows... But that is how he plays and that is clearly not going to change now.
Nowadays he is a yard (or two) slower, but of course his mentality remains the same. This can be hugely frustrating , when his mouth rather than his fouls get him (and the team) into trouble - Sheffield United away was a classic example - but there have been numerous others, when he has engaged his mouth before his brain.
However, in terms of Championship experience, I feel he has still offered plenty this season, Preston last week is a pretty good example, of using his vast experience to affect a result. Obviously he couldn't have legislated for the stunning winner from Anderson, but he played a big part in dominating mid-field and getting us in control of the game, second half. Bristol City and Oxford, thought he was decent too.
Now whether he is worthy of a contract extension is a different matter. The way he plays, offering a physical presence, is obviously hampered by him slowing down. Whether Varane is ready to deputise on a full-time basis or having Colback around on reduced wages for one more season, would be beneficial, is up for debate. My own feeling is that the latter would be the way to go.
But at least Colback has had a decent career and while he can be incredibly frustrating, I would consider him more 'worthy' of a strop (with the ref or the manager) than Ashby who has done the square root of fook all imo. Definitely do not want to see him at the club next season.

Joe Walsh

I said pretty much the same thing on the POTY match thread. I am in the minority, but not a huge fan of Nardi . I accept he is a very good shot-stopper and has earned us a few points in that regard. Equally, he has cost us a few points with his inability to deal with crosses (Coventry for eg) or dominate his area and poor footwork. Also at 30, he is unlikely to improve in either of these regards.
Joe Walsh on the other hand is only 23, which is an absolute pup for a goalkeeper. However, he will only improve with games and I would like to see him get regular games for us or go out loan. Being back-up keeper is the worst position of all, third choice keeper can go out for experience but 2nd choice is always needed for emergencies

This has nothing to do with budget and everything to do with a complete lack of desire

With all due respect, Nardi is a very average keeper who has reached an age when he is unlikely to improve. It is only when you see the Swansea keepers dominance of the box ( even in the intimidating presence of Dunne) that you realise Nardi's shortcomings. A very decent shot stopper but that's it. If he hadn't succeeded Berkovic he wouldn't have gotten such a free pass. Personally I would like to see Walsh get a run of games, he is never going to develop on the bench

Goodness, fair bit of negativity after yet another successful season staying up. I think the lads will be up for this one, cos whatever we know or don't know re Marti's departure, the lads will deffo be in the know. 2-1 The Rangers

Don't know him personally at all, but Angel Rangel came across as a really genuine guy when playing for us. Is he a coach nowadays? Always thought he would make a top coach..

To add to the list of 'opposites', it seems a good time to re-tell my Tony Currie story.
Summer of 1981, Venables brought the lads over for a friendly v Athlone. I was 17, not a child but still a little starstruck. Clapped Tony Currie on on the back at the end and said 'great game Tony, well played'. Turned around and said, 'would you ever fook off'.

But we didn't do ourselves any favours either by giving away some petty fouls and as for Edwards foul throw, that was just embarrassing. So we made it real easy for them to wind down the additional 8 minutes, I doubt there was 50% of that time actually playing football.

I presume he meant neither were fit enough for a full game so gave them a half (slightly more for Kolli) each. if that was the case and seeing we had lost a defensive midfielder before KO, why not start both strikers together like finished at Preston and go all gung ho from the off? Try to get one or two in front by HT and then replace them with your pacy players like Dembele and the kid making his debut and try to catch them on the break. After all, nothing to play for, big crowd, second last home game, good vibes after Friday - just go for it.
And if we continue to play out from the back next year without ONE SINGLE defender comfortable doing it, I really will lose my ... oops sorry, way off thread topic.

But what a goal, Nix! Incredible back heel that completely wrong-footed the keeper. Think it is time to move him on. I felt he was important this season as a seasoned campaigner with so many new faces lacking Championship experience. But he can be quite poor defensively. I think on three consecutive occasions yesterday he had routine headed clearances that he headed up in the air and put us under unnecessary pressure. Anyone can slightly mis-judge the flight of a ball once, but THREE times? He has done a decent enough job for us, but time to find a younger (and hopefully better) version.

Sorry, sent that before I intended and it won't let me edit. ...Mid Nov - Mid Feb. I understand you could be speaking more metaphorically than literally, as in we play better when the pressure is off and often don't turn up when the going gets tough. But in terms of digging ourselves out of the sh1t this season, all the heavy lifting was done in the coldest, darkest months of the year

I saw this in your report Clive and meant to comment on it then, but got sidetracked. I know some players have underperformed for most of the season with Madsen obviously being one of them. However, as a team I don't think they can be accused of bottling it in the depths of winter and only playing well 'when the sun comes out'. Quite the opposite in fact, we were shite in August/September/October and March, yet thrived in the depths of Winter

Broke out in a cold sweat when I saw the words 'lemon curd'. My mum 'force fed' me lemon curd sandwiches for ALL of my 14 school years. That's over 40 years ago - but I'll never forget.
