He was neither good nor terrible for me. He was perhaps an "okay" manager at the time, who did a reasonable job in keeping us up, then a respectable 12th place finish. He wasn't very charasmatic, and had a few issues with Le Tissier. He took over from Sounness and Merrington previous to that, who both only just kept Saints up on the final day of the season. I seem to remember some great games and results under Jones, beating Liverpool away and Newcastle at home in the rain at the Dell, to the demise of Ruud Gullet. In his final season before Hoddle came in, it was going to pot on the pitch but he lasted about 3 years wasn't it, and that was good going at the time! [Post edited 6 Oct 20:49]

If they ban him on Thursday, we can then leave it 14 days until we appeal. During tha period of deciding whether we appeal or not, I asssume Tonda can carry on managing? |

The 3 nil win at the Dell was a great day. The1984 cup game last minute winner is probably the best in terms of winning it in the last minute. We had a 3 nil win at St Mary's too at christmas time, after having beaten them in the cup wasn't it in the same week? Those two games were both easy wins I.seem to remember. Wasn't Strachan manager?
Rememeber all singing the Shaking Stevens classic Merry Christmas Pompey Scum in the Northam. |

Whatever happens with Tonda, it's a huge game on Saturday that Southampton Football Club has to win. The players need to get the job done and the supporters need to roar them on to victory. We can't afford the Tonda situation to overshadow just how important this game is. Deal with the fallout about Tonda (if there is one).after the game. Get the job done and beat those f@ckers come what may. |

Ah ok, but I guess I mean are the bulk from Fratton all.leaving at the same time? Last season some left at 7:30, some at 8:00, some at 8:30 etc but seems.like those from Fratton Park (and the same will happen for.us at St Mary's) all leave at the later time of 8:55, at the same time, so all fans arrive ready to leave at the same time. |

That's true that he doesn't mention how they will deal with illegal immigration and that is something that needs sorting. The issue is that the previous government did talk about it, but didn't actually achieve anything and net migration went up by a lot, so they arn't an alternative going by last time round. I suspect that Andy Burnham intends to rejoin the EU, which strangely might give us more power. Leaving the EU has given us very little power to stop.the boats.
Reform who will leave the ECHR, might well stop the boats, but will go harsh on everything else, stopping the scroungers but also probably damaging services and genuine people in need. The social care reform is so.important to so many as seen by the examples on here and lots of.people in life. Having to give away your house and life savings for your own care, has to change, as it's not right.
Ultimately, at the next election, it looks like all of Burnham's plans will be detailed in a manifesto and we can decide. I know he could be another liar, but he is at least sounding genuine and passionate about the change that is needed. [Post edited 29 Sep 20:46]

Well, exactly. It is totally wrong that a person saves all their life, and it all gets dwindled away on care bills, yet those who didn't save get care for free anyway. Everyone should get care, and those who save should get to keep their money that their loved ones should inherit. If it means paying an extra tax and / or getting a slightly less increase in my pension, so that everyone gets care, I think I would probabaly vote for that. 90 year olds ringing for an ambulance, when all they need is a carer, clogging up hospital corridors, is a stupid system. It needs to be paid for ofcourse. |

He has just given a very passionate, daring and emotional speech at the Labour conference, designed to revive and inspire the country. He certainly comes across as "someone different". The Triple Lock will go. A new social care system free at the point of delivery. We will get to vote on it before it happens. Are you more likely to vote for or against?
First thoughts are that things do need reform. People should not have to use their own savings and their house to pay for care IMO. People who need daily care, not emergency medicine are clogging up our hospitals. A care service, would greatly alleviate pressure on the NHS and doctors surgeries etc. But would you be happy to.pay a new universal tax to pay for it? Pensioners will still have a rise every year of at least 2.5 per cent, but will not have to give away savings when they need care in later life.
An admittance that welfare needs to be sorted out with more support needed to get young people into work. A new relationship with the EU mentioned too. At least he is trying to bring new ideas to the table, trying to bring hope, trying to change things. Will he deliver it? I don't know but he sounds convincing. [Post edited 29 Sep 15:28]

Absolutely spot on. Fiddling the books, finding loopholes, cheating the system, spying and all.sorts go on in football and in life. It was utterly stupid to send a well known SFC face to do it. As you say, we were stupid enough to get caught. |

Excatly, the cost of a pint is a massive factor. A lot of the youth are buying a cheap bottle of cider from a supermarket, which is half the price of one pint nowadays. Amd not just the youth, you can get much better value in a supermarket. |

But it's also energy costs, business costs, rents forcing pubs to charge more for alcohol than in supermarkets etc, so people don't go, it's too expensive. Having a drink in an English pub has always been a very English / British thing to do. England for many reasons isn't England any more and it's getting worse.
20 years ago, I went to Newcastle return for an advanced open return train ticket for £20. It's now about £200. For a family.of 4 that os £800. Totally unaffordable. Everything is far too expensive. [Post edited 23 Sep 10:34]

Another pub closing down in Eastleigh. We pay some of the highest taxes in the world on alcohol, and some of the highest taxes in general. Yet the pubs are all closing. Businesses just can't afford to continue anymore. So depressing. Perhaps Burnham is protecting the pubs in the north?
