Just back - Watford reflections
at 21:42 16 Aug 2025

Very, very good save after about two minutes. A few others more routine. Kicking better I thought. Some say he was at fault for the second goal but not sure I agree and didn’t feel that way at the time. Let down by those around him.

Madsen and Field midfield
at 21:32 16 Aug 2025

I like Chair in the role he had until Dembele blew up (again). Field, Varane and him feels like a good balance. Should Varane go, which I still think is plausible and we don’t sign anyone it has to be Field-Morgan-Chair surely. He can’t possibly be starting NM at a real football team like Coventry in their own ground.

I struggle to believe we’d have got less out of any professional footballer than we got from our Nicolas today. The kids tell me he’s an ‘8’ or ‘10’, a baller etc. but he gave the ball away from 1/3 of his passes, didn’t tackle anyone, didn’t shoot, didn’t do anything frankly that someone as poor as Dixon-Bonner could have or one of the plethora of kids around the squad. He is just sort of there in the way Jenas was but without the occasional goals.

Wat's the chances of a high scoring draw - match fred

PSG do it (and it works of course). The logic is you force them deep into their own half, as close to the corner flag as possible, press and win the ball from there. We smashed it out about 15 yards into their half, got given another go for some reason then did the same thing. Might as well have a shot and have them start from a goal kick as most of the Championship now is just hoping the opposition make a mistake playing out from a goal kick.

Also think it’s fair to say the attitude to Madsen here is considerably more mixed than at matches and particularly away. A lot of people, many usually placid individuals, are vocal about being sick of seeing him stroll about.

We were up against it with that bizarre team selection from the off and it got worse from there.

We have full-backs. Young players yes but it’s mental to move your star CB in the first game to left-back with no left foot and pray Morgan has an easy day as he did last week.

It’s ten men when Madsen plays away (10.5 when he plays at home). I sincerely hope he isn’t being imposed on the manager but if he’s not it worries me he thinks he can get a tune from him. As Smyth’s #1 fan I can’t see the logic in having him on the left unless he’s hoping to protect the full-back in which case just play an actual full-back.

Celar. Celar indeed.

On the plus side, Chair ran his nuts off and was our best chance of an undeserved equaliser until he was moved to accommodate the statue. Kone was a handful and Burrell at least competed with no service.

Concerning times indeed if he think he’s got a chance playing any team in this league with that team selection even taking into account the players not available.

Usual Watford stuff. New manager, not a lot of optimism about fairly unknown signings, Chakvetadze (sp?) injured. Baah scored midweek and he on his day is brilliant but they were dire at Charlton apparently and poor midweek with a mix of first team and reserves. Would be very Rangers to be poor and lose meekly but it’s ripe for the taking if we get at them. Ripe. Still, my 1-0 prediction stands cos Rangers innit .

I know as football fans we can be eternal pessimists but all my Watford mates are convinced they’re proper crap. Feels a huge opportunity to get early points on the board rather than burn winnable early season games.

1-0 Watford. Baah late goal.

Fair walk from WJ to the ground and it’ll be the usual crush to get in near kick-off. Assuming it’s vaguely on time you’d be just about fine but chancing it with it due to arrive at 14:22 so call it 14:30 once it’s a few minutes late and you get through the station so about 14:50 with a fast walk.

I’m convinced some of this is money laundering. Not Heggem I mean but some of these fees in general.

Correct. The League Cup runners-up have never got European football as far as I know. Nowadays the FA Cup runners-up don’t either which is poor given half the league gets into Europe anyway but think that’s a UEFA thing some suit has decided on to justify his job.

It wouldn’t happen because of some co-efficient-based nonsense and the strength of the Premier League as an organisation but with 1/4 of the league qualifying for the ‘Champions’ League it would breathe some life back into the FA Cup if that fifth spot went to the winners should they not be a top four team.

If he’s not got them with a realistic chance of automatic promotion at Christmas he’s probably in trouble and knows that. Going out in the first or fourth round of this makes a negligible difference to his prospects. Saying that, while he made changes, that’s a lot of experience to lose to Hudds reserves.

Walsh v Nardi
at 08:48 13 Aug 2025

Walsh fan here. Tell him it’s his shirt and he’s getting a chance. Nardi is a good goalkeeper with a huge flaw in his game which is unlikely to be fixed while Walsh can and should improve from a position of being a capable goalkeeper already. The worst thing for a goalkeeper is feeling you’re one error from being dropped.

People that went to Plymouth tonight - What was the general feelings re the team

It was the best and worst of Nardi. Walsh hasn’t done a lot wrong and there is one huge flaw to Nardi’s game that any team can expose quite easily. If you have Dunne at RB and two huge centre-halves you can cover for that to an extent and rely on him to do what he can do very well but a small defence with Nardi behind is going to concede soft goals from set pieces and crosses.

Trains for Watford

Quite pleasant pubs around Bushey station (or at least used to be- probably flats now). 25 mins or so walk to the ground if you don’t mind a hill.

The train national rail say is running for me goes via Shepherds Bush and skips all the little stops between Harrow & W and Watford Jct.

I reckon 95% of people of all ages would fail a driving test if made to do one today. Roads would be a bit busy too.

Call me old fashioned but if your lone striker isn’t there to score quite a lot of goals then he should be doing other things very well.

I get why it’s given but it’s a crap rule. He’s not gone in particularly hard, both players slide in and he gets more than a small amount of the ball before his momentum carries him into Winks. Maybe it’s one an assessor pats him on the back for but it’s not how the sport should be IMO.
