TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Swindon Town

They do not look great but we have not created much. Need to find Middleton in space more. Wilson and Tasker have been impressive. It feels like a 1-0 game
Hopefully it is us who gets the goal.

Taylor must be injured? Francis to sit and Gilmour and Adeeko to play either side of him? Good to see Beckwith back. I wonder if the bench thing is something to do with having to have X amount of players in the last match day squad in the FA Trophy line up?

If we look back at McNulty's regime it took him a year to stablise the club and start to build a culture with a limited squad when we were playing catch up due to late recruitment. By the second season we had a style of play and a better squad. The promotion season added to that.

Watson is in effect in a similar situation as McNulty was when he took over, apart from the financial issues. He is putting his stamp on how we play, which is focused on pacey wide players. He inherited a number of 'Jim's players' who maybe do not fit this new style of play and was late in the recruitment cycle. To top it off we have been decimated with injuries, especially in defense and central midfield. Two key areas.

I think we are starting to see green shoots. Middleton and Smith both possess quality and pace and Brown has added goals to his work rate. Flint has added some steel, experience and assurance at the back. If we can get through to January in a decent position we should be okay. I suspect there will be some shape shifting in the transfer window to strengthen the squad.

The summer will bring year two. Lots of players out of contract gives Watson room in the budget to recruit players who fit the profile he wants. Only Maguire, Smith, Francis, Hayes and Jenkins are under contract for next season. He will have plenty of time to identify targets.

A lot of 'Jim's players' will be out of contract and Watson will have time to plan recruitment wise to bring in the profile of player that he wants.

From the highlights 26 pulls back Brown as he is about to head the ball and should have been a penalty. Down the other end I have no idea why Tobi pulls the player back as there was cover.

With Moss out for the season and Maguire out for 10 weeks Beckwith and Bolongo can't come back quick enough to give us options at both left back and centre half.

Maguire being out again is a loss so I suspect it will be Tasker, Flint, Wilson and Moss with Tobi and Sherring on the bench. I suspect the rest of the line up to be the same as last Saturday. Will Hannant be fit enough to take his place on the bench or will Rodney or Silcott-Duberry take his place?

There are enough people up and down during the game as it is. This would make it worse. At least at the cricket they can get in and out of a row in between overs.

Absolutely. I get the back four was two first team scholars and a midfielder and that our central midfield was another scholar and a winger but we should have been able to see it out, especially after their second. The blind pass back into central midfield by Hayes that lost possession was not great. If he wacks the ball up the line into the corner it is probably game over. I am sure he will have more positive impacts in the months ahead.

With the injuries to East and Pettit we are severely lacking midfield options. Middleton has really good short area quickness. I noticed this on Saturday against Oldham.

Any update on Maguire. He was sat with the walking wounded in the directors area and I did not notice his using any crutches, which is a good thing.

The UK is dropping down the GDP per capita rankings as we have too many economically inactive people of working age. We also have a productivity issue.

There are many wonderful places of natural beauty on the outskirts of Rochdale and the architecture around the town hall area is impressive. Societal change has gutted high streets across the country and independent retailers have struggled to retrain customers. Energy/fuel costs are crippling business directly through increased costs and indirectly through a fall in custom through reducing discretionary incomes.

For years, politicians of all persuasions have failed the country and have no economic plan.

He has been okay to be honest. The midfield was slow back, but it is a makeshift three.

He was allowed to run and run. Francis looked like he was running in quick sand. Some decent play, the highlight being Rodney's great finish which adds to the frustration. The sending off was technically correct but a bit harsh in the spirit of the type of game it is.

Think he played full back in some preseason games. More worrying is Maguire's destraught face as he walked off before the other starters. He has since been replaced in the starting line up.

Very attacting line up. No idea who is playing midfield with Francis. Good to see Bradley getting a start. These games were always a good opportunity to play young players. Maguire getting some game time will be useful. I would like to see Hayes get 30 minutes in the second half.

Flint has the physicality to deal with the balls pumped into the box. Him and Maguire should be able to deal with that. Add Beckwith and Tasker either side and you have the physicality . Give them and Ramming a few games together and we should have a bit more stability. It takes time to build that defensive trust.

It appears that Watson wants a sitter to play with a more mobile midfielder. Yesterday Gilmour was playing more of the sitter. Adeeko is fairly mobile but Francis, whilst reasonable on the ball is not the most mobile. It is a shame Pettit got injured when he did as he would definitely be an option there.

Once the wide players get up to speed I think the forwards will get better service.

The gaffer expressed that there will be no further returns this weekend, with Sam Beckwith, Devante Rodney and Bryant Bilongo all missing out.

From the preview on the official site.

We started well and Tasker and Smith linked up down the right and then we kind of stopped playing, got a bit swamped in midfield and probably have been behind at the break. In the second half we looked more comfortable defensively and the substitions were proactive. If you have two wide players on the bench you can afford to spell at least one after 60 minutes. Maguire and Flint looked solid and I thought apart from dawdling on the ball a bit, Wilson had a decent game against Fondop. Certainly an education for the young lad.

Brown had an interesting game. He worked hard and won a few duels when the ball was played up to him. He did lack service but when he got his chance he took it well rolling the defender and hitting the corner. Hopefully the first of many. He is a willing worker and offers more pace than other options.

I still think we looked a bit open at times in midfield and how we ended with Francis sitting and Gilmour and Adeeko playing either side could be an option. When they get more match fitness our wide players could be a real threat as they have undoubted quality.

Started off well and used the wide players to get in behind. Then we have lived a charmed life. They are dominating in midfield. Taylor needs to drop deeper and we need to get the ball wide again especially with Hannant and Hayes to come on.

The wind is causing carnage.

Got in the ground early to avoid such problems and the over the top stewarding and there were a dad and lad sat in the seats of two season ticket holders who sit in front of me. When challenged whether they were sat in their correct seats the Dad said no and asked whether it matters.

Smith and Middleton finally start with Brown up top and Taylor at 10. Much more pace and mobility. If we can defend our box we might be okay.

Seeing the respective teams will be interesting. If they have Scott-Morriss at right back and Delaney and Daniels at centre back I would be looking to play in behind with Brown up front and pace on the left. They will be looking to stress test our box so I would not be suprised if Maguire and Flint start.
