The good news is that the full (except us) League Two programme tonight did us little harm. We remain only 2 points off the Play Offs, in tenth place. Chesterfield held Cambridge 1:1. Fleetwood held Salford 1:1. Notts County beat MK Dons. Whilst Cheltenham beat Swindon. Tonight, I don't think we could have wished for a better set of results in and around the Play Off chasing teams. |

Ten observations; 1. Our squad is too weak. We were awful in the first half. They ran rings around us. 2. I noticed West Ham (BBC) statistics at half time were massively better than Col U. First half we had zero shots and negligible possession. 3. We instantly improved when Tovide and Read replaced Gape and Goodwin. 4. Once Lisbie and Mbickreplaced Gordon and Williams on 73 minutes, the U's were utterly dominant. 5. By full time we had enjoyed 14 shots (WH merely 12) with 8 on target (WH 3). 6. Had Mbick scored the penalty, only one side was going to win this. By then, West Ham looked a spent force. 7. Their goalkeeper made a number of incredible saves. Deffo MoM. 8. By full time all the match stats (except goals) favoured Col U. 9. In summary, the Cowleys got this wrong. Our second string were not good enough to beat these outstanding kids, and they brought on the cavalry too late. 10. I walked home down the Boulevard and more WH fans than Col U kept me company. I also got a cab from the station at 18.00 and the trains were almost empty of Hammers fans. They patently only live around the corner. |

Think we have found a new Durham….. not necessarily the writing, but definitely the optimism! Good stuff! Frankly, I suspect this will be a dour affair. A Colchester back five, defending deep against a fluent quick possession based side, the U’s hoping to snuff them out and snatch a set piece winner. Home fans will probably be outnumbered, as closet Hammers fans pour out of Highwoods, Shrub End, Chesterwell Woods etc. Most having never been to the London Stadium. Hopefully some might be converted. I arrived in 2004 and sat in the Bristol City end at Layer Road, having followed the visitors over the previous five years (I have always supported my local team). I’ve missed few U’s games, home or away since then. A U’s win might inspire some youngsters that have never heard Bow Bells but follow their dads like sheep. Now I’m being the optimist…. |

One of the better refereeing performances as I didn’t detect any errors. But spoilt by a lack of bottle as regards yellow/red cards. Tovide was rugby tackled in the first minute, and no card there set the tone for the afternoon. Admittedly this helped Lisbie escape a yellow when kicking the ball away. But I find teams like Gillingham and Bromley frustrating. Over aggression kills quality. I’d hate to watch that every week. The wind also impaired things. Macy kicks struggled to reach half way in H2. A decent point, but disappointing game. |

Any ideas folks. I’ve not seen him at football or pub since before Covid. He was in a relationship with a lovely lady that was a member of my table tennis club. She’s gone too. I suspect they have moved away, but thought I might ask. |

The (repeated) scoreboard and verbal tributes confirmed to me a pleasing and distinct change of greater fan-focused and compassionate attitude by the club. Three huge club stalwarts had passed away between home games and the tributes were perfectly undertaken. By contrast, when Paul (Bingo) Wright passed away (a few years ago now), I recall that the club did nothing to acknowledge his loyalty and contribution. Paul (who had learning difficulties) sold seat cushions at Layer Road and latterly sold 50/50 tickets at the new stadium. Requests to hold a proper tribute to him were refused despite his 30+ years of service. Bingo was set a weekly sales target for 50/50 tickets that if exceeded gave him a free match ticket. We ultimately and belatedly discovered that he often bought all the unsold tickets himself, far exceeding the face value of the ticket, and his flat was hence full of useless prizes that he had won. Every free penny that he had was spent in the club shop (or Saturday pub). His lonely lifestyle was utterly devoted to Colchester United and weekly interaction with our group. The only games Bingo ever missed in any season were on Boxing Day (spent with his family). His last game was the Manchester United away fixture. Talking to others post-Cheltenham I was not alone in these thoughts and we raised a glass to Bingo, Peter and all of our departed colleagues. However, let’s praise the bond with fans now being created by the Cowleys and management in this new era. |

Arthur Read seems to have taken over from Noah Chilvers as our pantomime villain. Maybe his miss was justice, as I thought the first foul contact by the Cheltenham defender was outside the box. However that fluff apart, I felt this was a better performance than against Walsall and Notts County as Cheltenham were completely snuffed out of the game, whereby we rode our luck a little against the other two. Also a good performance by the referee, which I has been as rare as rocking horse poo. Hunt has never impressed me at full back. But last and this week he slotted into midfield well and did a great job. Payne and Bishop are key absentees, but Hunt as replacement could be the catalyst that prevents our wheels from coming off, combined with our finishers, JK Gordon, Edwards, Willams, Goodwin etc that allow Tovide, MBick and Lisbie to run until exhaustion and substitution. My one annoyance, what clowns keep releasing balloons onto the pitch, then boo when they are punctured? Fortunately, none interfered with play, but so often they do. I also thought I detected an occasional whistle in the crowd from the Family Stand. Kids are supposed to have adult supervision. But we do appear to have some feral types. |

A verbal announcement and scoreboard tribute today to Durham (Peter), along with tributes for two other U’s stalwarts. The club announcer did this with appropriate decorum and dignity. Best wishes of the club expressed to friends and family. |

1400 and we are still 20 minutes away on the CUSA buses. Shocking traffic congestion due to one way traffic through roadworks (with nobody working). No hope of getting to the micro-brewery Tap-Room or Hooters. Yet we spent 70 minutes at Peterborough Services! Let’s hope the day gets better….. |

I should be in the micro-brewery tap room pre-match Wessex. My doctor advised against the excitement of Hooters, such guidance additionally being endorsed by my bank manager. I’ve not mentioned the close proximity of Cobra else my missus would want her rotavator serviced. It’s a powerful 150cc two-stroke and ensures a well-churned furrow. We then had the option of “Safe”-Standing or (presumably unsafe) Seating. I elected for the latter. I’ve heard 700+ tickets now sold. Hope to see you there. |

I don’t know about the wheels coming off Notts County wheelbarrows, but Cobra Rotavators are based nearby. I plough my wife’s allotment in about an hour with a Cobra 150cc model. |

Great preview Toot. I offer three additions….. The NC fan clubhouse offers decent ales, but on our last visit we were refused admission. Frankly, we are too accommodating at the Jobserve as this lack of a welcome for travelling fans is now happening too often on away jaunts. Fortunately, we were aware of the following…. On the opposite side of the ground from the away turnstiles is a micro-brewery with taproom. Great selection of craft ales. Or…. If one is free of heart and blood pressure impairments one might try nearby Hooters. Scantily clad staff serving expensive p-water. Crap beer, but the ambiance is guaranteed to steam up your glasses and ensure better pre-match arousal than a meat pastie in a breeze block fan zone. |

I’ve known of Peter’s illness for a while but his passing has still shocked me. We frequently exchanged greetings at away games and the club has lost a true enthusiast. But that loss is incomparable to the loss that the family must be feeling. Condolences from all of the Colchester community. RIP Peter - Club Legend. |
