Unfortunately, where there are people and money there is always corruption.
That doesn’t mean however that good people should not call out the corruption when they find it. |

No problem in being optimistic grumps but don’t forget that they are currently playing in a Micky Mouse competition.
This is England doing what they have done consistently since 1966. Raise everyone hopes by beating the teams like the Czech’s. Play no hopers in the qualifiers for the World Cup and Euros, only to fall flat on their arses against top flight teams when it really matters.
As for Harry Kane. He’s never won a major trophy and isn’t likely to anytime soon. It would be better for the England set up if he were to retire and let some of the other players have a crack. After all he will be approaching 35 years old by the time of the next Euros [Post edited 30 Sep 10:31]

Well, it was wonderfully incentivised and productive in 2008 to the point that the whole banking system was at the point of complete collapse and had to be bailed out by Government using the public’s money.
As for Burnham’s speech. Personally, I can’t see a lot wrong with wanting a joined up Care Service and N H S or seeking closer ties to our biggest export market or for that matter having elections using Proposition Representation. [Post edited 29 Sep 18:49]

The Premier League restarts in a fortnights time.
Unless Man City’s punishment is announced and accepted by them ( both of which seem extremely unlikely) before the next schedule of matches, what will happen to their results going forward ? After all, it’s not as though the advantage they have gained over many seasons stops just because the F A have finally found them guilty is it ? Their advantage has been compounded over many seasons and I suggest lives on in the multi million pound team they have assembled that currently represents them.
Could we get to the almost farcical situation that other Premiership teams simply say that they don’t want to play against Man City because they currently have an unfair advantage in terms of the quality of their players they are still able to put out for them to have to play against ?
Given the wealth of Man City’s owners I can’t see that a financial penalty alone will have any effect whatsoever, so surely a points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League and Domestic Cup games are the only realistic options open to the F A ?
If this proves to be the case, then it needs to be done before another ball is kicked, otherwise the remainder of the Premier League and Domestic Cup season could well turn into a complete farce. [Post edited 26 Sep 16:41]

At this stage it’s all guess work I suppose.
Personally, If a lengthy ban is imposed I can’t see any way that S F C will terminate his contract.
Why ? Because it could lead to a disgruntled Tonda making it difficult for those in the management chain above him, given that I’ve never subscribed to the theory that they themselves were unaware of what was going on. Thus,it would make more sense to simplify let his contract run out.
Having said the above, it’s just my personal opinion and I’m not putting it forward as a statement of fact concerning who knew what. [Post edited 25 Sep 11:39]

Tonda’s contract with S F C expires in June 2027.
If he receives a lengthy ban it’s not inconceivable that the ban from football will extend beyond the expiry date of his contract.
If S F C employ Edwards ( or for that matter any other coach ) and they are successful,will S F C dispense with his services and reemploy Tonda at the end of his ban ? Seems unlikely to me. [Post edited 25 Sep 9:31]

The only people that thought he would have been Premier League level were the recruitment team at S F C and that says more about them than it does about him.
An asset in The Championship ? Absolutely.
Better than Damion Downs or Cameron Archer ? Without doubt. |

Ifonly is spot on.
We should have kept him.
Given a run in the team at the level we currently play he would have scored a hat full of goals.
Instead we opted to nurse a clearly long term unfit Stewart, put our faith in the likes of Archer and now the new kid on loan from Stoke. |

Shotters, I worked with Richard’s sister in law who if memory serves was married to Lawrie Scott, himself no mean cricketer but not quite as talented as his brother.
In those days it was quite common to play county cricket during the latter part of the week and on Saturday, then play a Sunday League game against the same opponent.
I was told that on Saturday night the two teams would socialise together which usually involved considerable alcohol consumption and other entertainment enough to make Ben Stokes’s recent indiscretions look like a vicarage tea party in comparison.
Apparently, it was surprising that many of the players were in any fit condition to take the field on the Sunday, let alone be able to see a cricket ball and be able to hit it. [Post edited 22 Sep 23:15]

By all means correct me if I’m wrong Nick, but initially didn’t we engage the services of a well known and respected brief only after the E F L verdict had been handed down, and we wanted to appeal the same ?
My opinion at the time, and still is, that the Club’s management thought that if they adopted a softly softly approach, didn’t contest the media narrative and relied on the old pals act at director level then not only would they save money in proper legal representation, but the punishment would not result in exclusion from the playoffs.
How wrong they were.
Hopefully, in regard to the F A they haven’t or won’t make the same mistakes and once again try and take a water pistol to a gun fight. [Post edited 22 Sep 11:52]

My thoughts also Pat.
In my opinion, to supposedly save money legal representation wise, we took a water pistol to a gun fight with the E F L , lost control of the media narrative and subsequently got kicked out of the playoffs.
I hope am wrong but now it appears that there is every indication that we are about to commit the same mistake again. |

Ironically you are correct in that you don’t get automatic promotion by losing away to teams like Watford and Wrexham and dropping points from winning positions at Lincoln and Birmingham.
You may finish top eight but then it’s just a completely lottery.
As for Tonda, I suspect that very soon he may not be allowed to remain our man, even if we want him too. [Post edited 19 Sep 18:20]

Glad to have brought those happy memories back for you Hythe and thanks for the story and thanks also to Shotters for his recollections.
I’ve fond memories of watching Hampshire play at Dean Park Bournemouth in what I recall was a Sunday League limited overs fixture against Kent. Colin Cowdrey was reaching the end of his career and was more than slightly over weight. When it was his turn to bat there was a mass chant of “ bring on fatty” from one of the beer tents. He duly arrived and dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground with consummate ease, proving that unlike today you didn’t need to be super fit to be a top flight player.
Somehow life seemed more relaxed with more fun in those days, but then again I suspect that previous generations have also all said the same as their years reach a conclusion. [Post edited 19 Sep 13:25]

Sad times indeed for Hampshire.
I don’t attend now but well remember seeing their Championship winning side play at Bournemouth ( It was in Hampshire then ) during the 1961 season.
They were captained then by the very colourful charachter Colin Ingleby Mackenzie and also had a very fine bowler in Derek Shackleton.
Ingleby Mackenzie was a genuine Eaton educated toff who amongst other events in a colourful life was one of the last people to see Lord Lucan alive. Mackenzie died from a brain tumour and his funeral in St Paul’s Cathedral was attended by more than sixteen hundred people. [Post edited 18 Sep 19:48]

Play at home on Sunday and get done by a goal that was clearly offside from a team playing with ten men for most of the game.
Play on Tuesday and lose to Brighton after leading 2-0.
Almost makes up for those years of “ Fergie Time” and those less than neutral referees.

The first sentence of your second paragraph in particular.
Then again Nick is entitled to his opinion just like the rest of us.
As for players who Nick simply couldn’t stop criticising, I give you Mia Yoshida who I believe still holds the record for the most appearances in The Premier League for a Japanese player and was until quite recently, still playing in their national team.
As for Bazunu I thought that he was a player promoted beyond his abilities. Perhaps a spell as Bolton’s number one keeper will help him prosper, who knows. |
