That’s true he did
I just have no time for arrogant people, especially someone like him who has absolutely nothing to be arrogant about. I took an instant dislike to him because it saved time

22 Dreams and True Meanings in particular are great lp’s

I saw him in Woking when he played at the leisure centre in 2010 when he did a benefit gig for the local hospice, it was excellent. A great night at a place that was a regular haunt in my teenage years, saw lots of old faces that I hadn’t seen since school

I said to my dad as we were queuing up to get into Wembley Park after the game that I hoped he would adapt otherwise the next season would not be any fun

Still what does a decorator know? Not clever or brave enough to understand what Brightons answer to Rinus Michels was trying to do

Whilst I take on board that Martin got us promoted, any credit there was completely wiped out by his time managing us in the premier league
Anyone could have told you playing that way was going to be a disaster, you didn’t need to be an expert or be clever enough to understand what he was trying to do, utter madness with the players we had
Yes it was going to be pretty much impossible to stay up with the side we had, but at least he could have tried to make us hard to beat and slightly competitive. When the likes of Luton and the resources they have make a better fist of it, you have to ask some questions. To quote the old saying we were down before the Christmas decorations were down, well we were down before I’d even got up in the loft to get them out, and that was all down to that clown

Redknapp
Martin
Branfoot

Closely followed by Nathan Jones

Redknapp made a team that was more than capable of staying up a complete mess, typical of him it wasn’t his fault

Martin was an arrogant narcissist who put his ego and career before the club

For all his faults, how long have I got! Branfoot kept us up and we did win 6 in a row under him in his first season

Nathan Jones was a complete nutjob but should have never been given the job, his first interview showed he was completely out of his depth

Andy Burnham's speech
at 17:42 29 Sep 2026

True
I should have remembered what a nightmare I had dealing with Woking council with regards t my mum. Constant delays and then finding out the person who was dealing with my mums issue had moved to another department and the cycle started again

Probably time for me to pause on this topic, a classic case of emotion over logic

That won't be a Labour government

Andy Burnham's speech

One of the problems I see with the cost of care homes is that they are owned by private firms, the one that my mum is in is owned by a company who have about 10 in the south of England and it's about profit rather than providing care to the most needy in society

A few years ago I did some decorating work for someone who owned a home and closed it down as "the financial return wasn't as good as it used to be" I was pretty shocked that he said this so openly considering that I'd told him my mum was in a care home that was a mile away from where his was and the work I did for him was redecoration so he could sell the building

Perhaps I'm being slightly naive and simplistic in my thinking but if it's run as a national concern and not for profit then it might not cost so much?

Andy Burnham's speech

My mum was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1975 when she was 27 and been in and out of hospital at various times during her life, she's spent the last 8 years in a care home as she's been bed bound for the last 10 years and has chronic bed sores amongst other things

She's "lucky" that she hasn't had to pay for her care as it's deemed essential and paid for by the NHS, had this not been the case everything she had would have gone years ago

My father in law is approaching 90 and has advanced dementia, he is cared for by my 83 year old mother in law who is really struggling to cope now. When she approached her local council in Essex for help and guidance they didn't want to know or even advise as "they had funds to do it themselves"

Both need care due to illness and it's a lottery as to whether you get care funded or not

I watched Andy Burnham's speech and got quite emotional as it really resonated with me thinking about some of the things that have happened to my mum

This is something that is really important to me and I've been saying for years that at some point we as a country have to have a sensible, grown up conversation about the care system. I'm happy to pay more tax to fund the system if needs be, I'm quite principled about it. As a self employed tradesman I never do any work for cash as if I don't contribute to fund the care my mum receives then who will?

Even if Andy Burnham doesn't succeed in reforming the care system I applaud him for trying, someones got to

When I first met my wife and we were discussing music she was talking about UB40 and Aswad, she's really into all types of reggae, I immediately thought of their stuff from the 80's which was of no interest to me and put me off the genre as ridiculous as that sounds.
After her playing me Signing Off and Live And Direct it opened my ears and mind to many new things, Handsworth Revolution by Steel Pulse is a real favorite lp of mine now

As I heard Stuart Maconie say once "There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure"

My tastes have changed as I've got older and there are records that I used to really like a few years ago that I very rarely listen to nowadays, I could probably sell a third of my collection and not really miss it
Whilst I'm open to revisiting records that I've dismissed before, no one can ever convince me that Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart is a classic, I hated it the first time I heard it, tried again on frequent occasions as whilst it's a difficult listen "it's so rewarding if you persevere" no it isn't, it's unlistenable and I'll never "get it" I''ll stick with Safe As Milk and Clear Spot thanks

That’s like saying I only know Rod Stewart for Sailing and justifiably saying I’m out
His early solo lp’s, The Faces and Python Lee Jackson are a totally different kettle of fish

Songs In The Key Of Life, Talking Book and Innerversions, the 3 lp’s I own are nothing like his later work, as FT says in his opening post in this thread

Had a listen this morning
It's actually reminded me that I have Songs In The Key Of Life and I think I"ve only listened to it once, yeah I know
Went through a stage of buying lp's that were critically lauded from various artists because I thought I should have them in my collection

Reading any good books right now?
at 22:48 28 Sep 2026

There was a question on House Of Games this evening about the number of independent bookshops in this country
Wasn't surprised that it's less than 1000, even Charing Cross Road doesn't have as many as I remember
Guildford was always the place to go locally when I was growing up, no record shop there anymore and I don't think there's anything other than Waterstones
Probably the Amazon effect and people just not buying physical books and lp's as much

I'd love to read Russell Martin's autobiography Scar Tissue when it comes out
I'd imagine it will be like Bouncing Back by Alan Partridge, loads of anecdotes ending with the phrase "Needless to say, I had the last laugh"

Compared to some of the subjects on this thread the fanzine book, Manchester Chronicles by Clint Boon and a couple of Robert Elms' books will be what I take on holiday in a couple of days, seem pretty low brow

Yep
I got a severe bollocking when my boss at the time saw the phone bill after we’d beaten Norwich 5-4
Weren’t allowed to have a radio on and I was told we’d won it in the last minute

The fact that I can still remember the number 30 odd years later is quite telling

Correct
Saints club call

An absolute rip off and in the days before 5live the only way I could find out the final score
I remember going to the phone box round the corner from where I lived, my mum wisely only had a phone that received incoming calls, and spending a small fortune and finding out the final score of an away game at Villa in about 1989, the season that we went over 20 games without a win

On a different note that phone box was opposite Andrew Wessex’s Pizza Express of choice which is a couple of minutes walk from my mums house

Anyone else remember what that was the number for?

You’d have been around in the 1980’s to know what I’m on about

Spent way too much time, and money, not always mine, phoning this number

I've been thinking about buying a decent overcoat for a while and that one is very nice. Not phased by the cost at it will last for years. If I get a big refurb job that I'm quoting for, then I could be tempted by that or something similar

Bought a couple of Norse Projects merino polo's recently, expensive but really nice
