In my opinion withdrawing the luxury brands does not go far enough. Motorbility should only provide base vehicles suitable for a person's needs, any top of the range models within the allowed vehicle manufacturer, the difference should be paid for by the individual.

Isn't the difference already paid by the individual ? If the allowance is say £300 and the leasing of the car is £400 then they have to pay the £100 extra themselves. Don't they ?

Technically. If the individual isn't working the taxpayer picks up the tab anyway.

Should benefits be a safety net or support a particular level of lifestyle?

Taken from Which . "The scheme offers a wide range of cars, from city cars and small hatchbacks to large family models and MPVs. However, more expensive models are subject to a one-off advanced payment, as the mobility allowance doesn't entirely cover their cost. The more expensive a car is to buy, the more expensive the payment will be. Some small cars, MPVs and SUVs are exempt from advance payments "

It's more complicated than that with numerous possible outcomes. That's why some luxury brands have been completely removed from the scheme. Unless you actually work within the system you don't actually know how to take advantage, in layman's words "take the piss".

Depends. If someone is unable to work due to genuine ill health, or because they're caring for someone with genuine ill health, they should be supported. In fact carers in general should receive more support because they're a helluva lot cheaper than the alternative. I would raise the rates of contributory based benefits, bring in workfare, and look long and hard at the current ability for people to sit on the dole for long periods of time and still qualify for a state pension/pension credit.
