5 Things About West Brom Game 10:01 - Dec 10 with 1223 viewsSaintNick

1. I thought we were superb first half and complacent the second, but as I said in the preview, the main thing was to get 3 points and we did.

2. We made the wrong substitutions and too early

3. It was nice to see Iain Dowie at the game, funny how having no hair makes you look a lot different, certainly in his case.

4. Hopefully we will learn from this game, if we do then we will keep winning.

5. Gavin Bazunu deserves credit for his form in recent games, he kept us in this one in the second half, he is benefitting from Tonda Eckert and the confidence in the team

We look awful whenever Scienza isn't on the pitch.

I'm not sure what we need to "learn" that we shouldn't already know.

It looked to me like we got into a great position at half time. Then out tactic seems to be to coast through the rest of the game, take key players off and just manage the game to it's conclusion.

However anyone that has ever played the game or even just watched, knows that this is a risky strategy. One early goal and the entire momentum of a game changes. I have quite a few mental scars from being 3 up at half time.
Why don't we go for another 1 or 2 goals like we did in the first half. Keep them in their own half. If we get a 4th then we can take people off with 20-25 to go.
I just think TE wants to ship oars too early to rest players. If we are 4 or 5 up then those players get a rest anyway as the fight goes out of the opposition.

TBF though we won which is a big improvement since WS left. I wasn't keen on given Ekert the job and I'm still not 100% convinced but I'm happy to be proved wrong and he's done very well so far.

We need to respond to the tactical tweaks of the opponents. I think anyone who watches Saints, currently, knows who's getting subbed and generally when.
We respond in kind, they improve their midfield, we strengthen ours, they put an extra man upfront, we go to a back four. It's a different perspective if you are chasing a game but that's not the case here.

I think some people want jam on it.

Rarely does any team plays brilliantly for 90 mins. Energy has to be managed and when you get a 3 goal lead, it's natural and probably sensible to reserve resources a little.

And there's always another team on the pitch. WBA upped their game and then their energy and confidence increased further as they started scoring.

I'm pretty confident about the Norwich game. They've improved a bit but they're sill not great.

I’m sure you are taking the piss with Bazanu, if not you must be his father/uncle/grandad/lover

Was at the other end of the ground to it, but it looked like he made some decent saves in the second-half last night.

And he was certainly a lot better than Birmingham’s keeper on Saturday.

I am always a bit nervous about him, but I think since (but not including) Millwall he has done well.

1. Eckert identified problems and had subs ready just before we conceded, just didn't manage to get them on the pitch.
2. System places a huge strain on the wingbacks. Both much better going forward but Fellows absolutely shattered by time he was substituted and unable to function defensively.
3. Despite three centre backs can't seem to win headers from set plays.
4. Eckert needs to change it up for Saturday or we will get a repeat of Millwall.
5. Speedy passing through lines requires constant movement. Second half movement slowed, passes slowed and became hopeful or predictable and West Brom got back in the game after a bollocking at half time.

i thought he saved them from shipping 6 or 7,think youre pushing it a bit to say bazuna was better than him.For me if we are serious about promotion we need better and thats why ramsdale was brought in last season, for me he will cost us over the season.

So was I. Just watched highlights, I can confirm he made 2 okay saves and was nowhere for the 2nd goal. A normal 4/10 baz performance

I thought Baz did OK and overall I dont think he is the weak link that many people he is.
Understand that Ramsdale was a step up in quality but that what £20m+ buys you.
Baz is quick on his feet and relatively agile but does suffer from his relative lack of height.
That said it was interesting to note that Ryan Fraser was making the big defender in the penalty area who scored the second goal.

I saw Iain Dowie leaving a Sam Smith gig a few years ago.

I’m assuming he was also there under sufferance.

He’s had a dicky ticker recently so I’m glad he’s doing OK now.
