Derby County 1 v 1 Portsmouth
EFL Championship
Saturday, 20th December 2025 Kick-off 15:00
Southampton V Coventry City The Verdict
Monday, 22nd Dec 2025 08:44

A packed St Mary's crowd got it's money's worth on Saturday, both during the game and in the moments after the final whistle, but ultimately it was the Sky Blues who were more satisfied with the draw.

Tonda Eckert again only made minimal changes to his starting XI, with Joshua Quarshie coming in for Jack Stephens and Welington in for Ryan Fraser on the right, with Tom Fellows seemingly not ready for a place in the starting line up and having to be content for a place on the bench.

The first half was a hard fought contest with both sides having their chances and Gavin Bazunu having to be at his best to make sure that the scores were level and Saints also having their chances.

It seemed to be heading for a goal less first half when on the stroke of half time the visitors took the lead, this was not Saints greatest defensive moment we had plenty of defenders in the box, twice as many bodies as Coventry players, but none thought to actually mark Mason-Clark who was all on his own to pick his spot with a header from about 8 yards out.

Poor defending and again it highlighted the lack of leadership and organisation in the Saints defence, there were at least 3 of our players just stood watching, some good first half work was wiped out in one moment of disarray.

If you missed that goal and many did due to heading for the concourses, then if you were also late back to your seat, you would have missed the games next crucial moment, Dasilva being sent off for an appalling tackle on Welington.

In real time it looked harsh on the player, but TV replays showed the ref had got it spot on and those who claimed later that Frank Lampard was incensed with this and it was the cause of his strange behaviour after the final whistle would note that he would have seen these replays as Welington was laid on the ground being treated, he would have known it was well deserved.

This turned the tide of the game in Saints favour, but did it completely help them, Coventry had a lead to defend and were determined to keep it, they had two solid defensive lines and just the one man up front who himself spent most of his time in midfield.

It didn't take to long for Saints to be back on terms, Nathan Wood getting in what was the perfect header to even things up and with 34 minutes left on the clock, you fancied Saints chances.

Just after the hour mark on came Tom Fellows, but the problem for him and indeed all of our players was the dogged defending from the visitors, they still had something to defend and they were determined to get at least a point.

Time after time the Saints waves surged forward, but every time they repelled the attacks cleared the ball and we started again, their only method of attack was the long ball to the lone striker and that was easily dealt with.

When we did get an effort on target the Coventry keeper was up for it and made several decent stops.

So the game finished all square and Coventry celebrated as if they had won promotion on this day, apparently according to Adam Blackmore, so did their media in the press box, they had come not to lose and had achieved that.

So for Saints fans it was a disappointing game in that we did not win it, but it should be remembered that Coventry are the best side in this division, they are 11 points clear of 3rd place, if they fail to get promoted in the automatic spots it will have been a spectacular collapse.

But if we look at this from a positive perspective, we matched a side that have lost just twice this season, Ok they were down to 10 men in the second half, but we had been their equal in the first half apart from that one lapse.

You could say that when they dropped down to 10 men, their tactics did not help us, the likes of Leo Scienza and then Tom Fellows when he came on, had little room to make their runs and get in behind their defence and when they did get balls into the box, they outnumbered us with so many players still behind the ball.

We should take the positives from this, this was two good sides going head to toe, to be fair we would probably have been happy with a point before the game, but as they went down to 10 men, many will feel we should have won it.

A fair point, but not a completely valid one, if you go down to 10 and adapt your tactics in the way that Coventry did, then they had as good a better chance of not conceding a second goal as they would have had with XI players on the pitch.

The only complaint I had was the "Dark Arts" employed by the Sky Blues, I lost could of the number of times I could see a Southampton shirt being pulled both inside and out of the box and if I could spot that from 50 yards away, why were the ref and linesman not doing so.

It was not just shirt pulling, the red card tackle was not necessary, Welington was near the touchline on the half way line, Coventry were pumped up for this game and were prepared to use any tactic to win it.

Frank Lampard managed the game after that red card to get a draw and not to sneak a win and I suspect not one Coventry supporter will criticise him for that.

I would imagine most Saints supporters will not have seen the bizarre actions from the former Chelsea player after the final whistle and I will tackle that in a separate article, but it was a shock to see Frank Lampard behave like that, Taylor Harwood-Bellis seemed to have calmed him down, but then it all went off again.

I can't see what set him off, yes the Northam End gave him a little bit of stick for being a Sh*te Steven Gerrard, but lets be fair that is hardly vitriolic abuse, I am sure Lampard had heard far worse in over 600 games for West Ham, Chelsea & Manchester City, as I said it couldn't have been the sending off, he would have seen the replays within minutes.

I think it was the sheer adrenalin, this was a big test for his side and they came through it and the final whistle just saw all those emotions explode.

It was not nice to watch, it could have sparked some far worse scenes off the pitch than it did on, but this is football it is about passion.

So we march on, we now need to get back to winning ways and Oxford United are next up on Boxing Day.

Probably a little off subject I appreciate.

But having seen the way Lampard had his players organised and the way they defended after the sending off, I couldn’t help but wonder how on earth with Ralph in charge, we managed to lose not one but two games 9-0 under similar circumstances. Totally mystifying.

Eckert appears to have got our home form stabilised. What needs to happen now is that we take a leaf out of Coventry’s book away from home. When you have a positive result on the horizon don’t throw it away as we did at Millwall and Norwich please.

Best seasonal wishes to you Nick and all long suffering Saints fans wherever you are in the World.

It is harder for Saints to play against 10 men. Perhaps Oxford will employ this!

I think for the last 15 or 20 we should’ve moved THB up to centre forward. Wood and Quarshie should’ve been able to deal with Coventry attacks as down to 10 and defending deep. THB started as a forward and with no forward height on the bench would’ve been a headed target for some of the crosses, particularly those of Fellowes. It would also have given Saints the option of him returning to defence if we scored and not needed to make a substitution. The other decision I would question is bringing on Archer rather then Robinson fir that very height reason in the box.

No matter who our coach and manager is we rarely have a plan B. Teams have worked out how to stop us being an attacking force time and time again but we don't seem to work out how to overcome packed defences etc. When we go down to 10 men we usually lose and lose badly. Other teams use it to motivate them.

It was an entertaining game and good championship football. We can forget about promotion - we are miles off it. But, I am happy to see games like that, albeit I would rather we won them - I could be wrong but I don't think we have actually beaten any of the top sides!

I am not fussed by Lampard's reaction at the end personally. I don't think he has a problem with Saints per se and I think it is just part and parcel of what the game meant for both sides.

I don't think Lampard set up for a draw after the red card. They were winning 1-0 .
They were aiming to hang on for a win !!
We equalised not long after the red card and most thought we would go on to win it, but a combination of dogged defending, great goalkeeping and spurned chances meant it finished all square. Probably a result most would have taken before kick off and certainly at HT.
Regarding the dark arts, I feel we are too naive when it comes to dishing it out and being on the receiving end. We are too nice, too polite almost. Perhaps Romeu has been brought in to toughen everyone up !! :-)

I think we should have no complaints about the result. My opinion is that Coventry were the better TEAM in the first half and the sending off changed the dynamics in the second half.
Defensively we have problems and most supporters will look at the marking, however if you have the opportunity of watching the buildup prior to the cross Ryan Manning was nowhere and note his body language in not attempting to chase the Coventry player who made the cross. Extremely poor. For all his attributes going forward he is exceptional poor defensively on occasions.

On the first half showing you can see why Coventry are top. Their teamwork and link-ups were good (typical Lampard style as a player) but whilst they have several good individuals I don't see much Prem. quality in their ranks. IF they get promoted, it may be a short stay.

As for the match. The statistical advantage of playing against 10 men is often grossly over-rated and Coventry were content to park the bus, even for 100 minutes. I agree with SaintseSimon (above) it was interesting to see THB playing as an attacking wingback, but he really could have been played up front where we lacked height in attack. He does possess some "aggression" and can put himself about in the box where it matters.
For all their talent, Armstrong and Scienza are too lightweight against tough defenders.

Coventry had few meaningful attacks after HT, and Quarshie looked better and Wood even had time to get up and score. Both keepers did well when it was needed, but I'd have to admit that their keeper (Rushworth) earned the point for them with several good saves.

After the Norwich " blip" and then one pojnt (albeit against the leaders) we really need to prepare ourselves to D.A.J . v. Oxford who are already in deep trouble. Anything less than a convincing win will surely give Tonda a lot to think about going into the New Year / and the transfer window. Half of the bench may look convincing, but even using all 5 subs. every game hasn't improved any of the final results.

In terms of preparation, their goalkeeper was known to be a great stopper and proved it throughout the game. Therefore, it was either going to take something special to beat him, or more intelligent play. Scienza was through on goal and his shot from within the 6 yard box had liittle chance of beating him, while a simple ball the Armstrong should have made it 1-0. Again, later in the match, Armstrong rather typically scuffed a shot straight at the keeper. Our strikers need to be coached to make more of these chances, no least when a team is defending so deep and doggedly! Conversion rates have been poor for a very long time.

I thought it was a poor decision to play Wellington at Right back to make room for Manning.
Had Wellington beeen on the left i,m sure he would have prevented the cross for their goal coming in,and when he was going forward being let footed he had to go inside and that made it easier to defend.Jay Robinson needs game time he is very promising but he wont improve sat on the bench,.I dont know why THB and Nathan Wood seem better a gettng to headers in the opposing half and cant get off the ground in their own box.

I think again, this game demonstrated one of the areas that needs addressing in January or the summer: a dominant number 9. There was imo little point in bringing on Acher if we were going to leave Armstrong on. It became crowded as Coventry sat deep defending and therefore neither had any space to run into, and we bizarrely kept crossing the ball when neither were there or had little chance of winning a header at 5 foot nothing each ! We need a different (physical) type of striker for game situations like this.

Decent game for the neutral, but we are on a four-game run Will Still type of run at present, where bar 45 minutes against West Brom, we've not really been at it enough to get anything out of the games.

Coventry should actually have been down to 10 after five minutes due to Eccles two footed off the ground challenge on Ryan Manning but the referee bottled it not even a yellow card. We are really missing Ross Stewart or someone similar, AA is great but sometimes we need some extra height in the box, not sure THB would be the answer. Hope Sports Republic take note.

Frustrating day overall but onwards and upwards hopefully in 2026.

We got a point off the leagues leading team sio I'm happy with that
First half chances were rare but we had two that probably should have been converted
Their goal could have been avoided but for a couple of mistakes by Manning He could have let it go out for a throw but having kept it in play he should have hit a 40yrd clearance
Once they rightly went down to 10 men we dominated the game We created enough chance to make their keeper MotM
Unlike most I agreed with Archer coming on Upto that point we were short of bodies in the box when the ba was played in I thoughtght Archer and Armstrong would park themselves around the penalty spot and wait for the service
We need to average 2 points a game from here so wins at Oxford and Brum are a must

Three things:
1. Who agrees with me that AA really should have scored fairly early on by chipping the speadeagled keeper as he did memorably earlier this season. But instead hit it straight at him along the ground.
2. I cannot see Coventry surviving in the PL when they get promoted as they surely must. They remind me of Leicester couple of seasons ago who swept all before them in the Championship and then look what happened.
3. Unfortunately I cannot see us being anything other than PL cannon fodder should we by some miracle get to join them. We remain a very good championship side, but unfortunately not a tip top one and, as we continue to have a creaky defence, I don’t see that changing any time soon.
