We played well yesterday and as pointed out in previous posts on this thread, we are easily good enough to finish in a play off spot. The league table doesn't lie and we are in a very good position now. Boston on Tuesday would be massive if we could beat them, which we should do if we want to be viewed as serious contenders. I hope that McNulty doesnt try to shoe horn EEL into the team by tinkering with the defence. We have the best defensive record in the league so that part of the team is working. Birds injury is a concern, with Rodney out long term we could be short on options again. Bird wasn't match fit when we signed him which Jim pointed out in his interview. Glad the games with these oddballs are now out of the way. There’s been a lot of criticism about our style of play this season (often justified) but I’m glad I don’t have to watch Oldham every week. The most anti-football side I’ve seen for years. Hoof and hope for the best is the kindest way of describing it.
And if I was an Oldham council tax payer I’d be fuming that some of my money was used for that pitch. Our problems are well documented but for what they’ve been given when they brought out the begging bowl, it’s an absolute disgrace. |  |

Thanks for that. I hope Bird can shrug off his injury, i was surprised to see him come out for the second half yesterday. Without a player like him up front we don't pose enough threat. He ran through the Latics team at one point during the second half and put a chance on a plate for Mitchell, he half heartedly failed to test the keeper and ballooned the ball over the bar. He never looked like scoring what was a really good chance. He's too laid back and his anticipation is terrible, similar to Rodney. We might have to find another striker for the run in and it might be worth a financial gamble in trying to bring in somebody with a proven track record if possible. A Paddy Madden Jordan Rhodes type player. They turn draws into wins. We have some massive games coming up in the next six weeks and we can't be relying on Mitchell and Henderson to score the goals. Yes, it was relegation form leading into the Altrincham FA Trophy game and the fans were right to voice their displeasure after the Barnet game. They could see that the squad was under performing and results were poor. The players are a honest bunch they will have known that also.The response since then has been excellent. Boston is a great chance to pick up another win on Tuesday, it will be their second away game in a few days and the early kick off will have given us a bit more chance to rest also. Something else that needs mentioning from yesterday, Oldham pitch is worse than ours to play on. I dont want to hear McNulty citing tiredness and the pitch to excuse performance anymore, the squad is a good one and there's no reason why we can't claim a play off place. Let's talk up our chances and attack the remaining fixtures because there's nothing to fear in this league, both York and FGR are well beatable. If we fall short then so be it but let's not wimp out of contention and start playing the blame game. Some of the teams we are competing against are part time in this league and McNulty has been backed by the Ogdens this season. [Post edited 16 Mar 9:33]

What the management team and the players have proven over the last six games is that they have a way of playing that can be effective, entertaining and one which gets results. It might not suit all our personal tastes always, but with the addition of one type of player we have seen exactly what they’ve been trying to achieve for the last couple of seasons.
Nothing has changed fundamentally within that and there was little doubt that the manager would have been in big trouble if that run of results had continued. The Altrincham cup game was massive.
Now of course there will be mistakes made on and off the pitch (yesterday’s squad construction when utilising loan players being one), now though this team has evolved to a stage where supporters can see possible success in the future. Even yesterday I’ve seen some understandable criticism of us going more “defensive” in the second half. I don’t even think that was the case, it’s that Oldham got further up the field (Mellon notes they needed to in his Jurassic era interview) and we then didn’t keep the ball well enough once we defended that. It led to much needed substitutions, especially Allarakhia who was not coping with Caprice and too much of a reshuffle because of who was on the bench. We’d have still taken three points but for a fortuitous goal.
My main worry is how we cope if Bird is injured in the short term and how he’s replaced if we can’t keep him in the longer term. There’s now proof we need a mobile target man to play effectively using McNulty’s tactics. [Post edited 16 Mar 10:15]

I don`t see midfielders having shooting very often. This is a defensive midfield- one concerned with holding onto the ball rather than releasing forward. The midfielders have scored 13 goals from 138 league appearances. That is very poor, and much worse than the Keohane/Lund/Sinclair days in a much higher standard. Couple that with only 2 goals in 84
appearances from the defenders -set pieces??
Either the players concerned are not encouraged to score, or they do not have the talent in their lockers. | | | |

We definitely went "more defensive" in the second half something I did mention yesterday, Oldham did come at us more after half time as obviously they needed to, we could have helped ourselves by not turning backwards so often and putting every man behind the ball, there was an almost identical passage of play when in the first half Barlow who I thought was critical to the way we played, during the first half he received the ball with acres of space ahead drove forwards in the second half he took an extra touch then turned round to find a pass backwards instead.
There's a clear improvement in how we've played recenty so massive credit for that and we shift it from back to front much faster too again its noticeable, I just think yesterday was a massive missed opportunity to put a few goals passed whats possibly the worst Oldham side ive ever seen, that's saying something too. | | | |

The turning point for me was that Mitchell miss. Bird was obviously struggling and probably the last thing he did was put that Mitchell chance on a plate for him. He ballooned over, Bird went off we started getting put under a bit more pressure. EEL came on and that definitely signalled Jim's intentions of just trying to hold onto the 1-0. |  |

Boston are in the relegation zone, we beat them 3-0 at their place and if we are serious about competing with the top teams we need to really be stamping our authority on this game tonight from the first whistle and picking up three points. I know Boston have won their last four away games but if we replicate recent home performances we will have too much for them. Let's get stuck into them and impose our game on them with a high tempo performance. Trying to turn it into a game of cat and mouse isn't required and the condition of the pitch or tiredness isn't relevant. These are the type of games that we have to maximise points wise so let's make it difficult for them tonight in what is their second away game in the last few days. I think the last decent season we had under Hill we won 10 (TEN) home games in a row! Season 16/17, we had 40 points in Jan and looked certainties for at least the play-offs. We then managed to go 10 without a win and just missed out. I cant imagine we've won many at home in a row since then. | |

Yes, nothing can be taken for granted, we couldn't beat Ebbsfleet at home last month. I just think that if we concentrate on our own performance we will be too good for them. The deterioration of our pitch seems to have coincided with a improvement in our home performances and I'm hoping that continues tonight. I think this is a pivotal game for us. | | | |
