I can see them throwing the book at them, stripping their titles, points deduction, relegation, massive fines etc.

Then later Man City mount a legal challenge against the whole FFP rules and eventually win, because they are clearly nonsense and stifle competition. Then they sue the Premier League for massive loss of revenue and essentially bankrupt them.

I think City has probably left it too late to get any benefit from trying to overturn the FFP rules.

The PL is a membership organisation and the members are bound by contract to be governed by the rules of the organisation.

The PL charged City with breaches of FFP from 2009-2018.

The statutory limitation for contractual breaches is six years. And that runs from the time of the breach, not the date the breach of contract was discovered.

So even if City successfully challenged FFP in the courts it wouldn't help them to recover any damages from them breaking those rules before 2020.

Its a very good article but, and I am no fan of his, the little section on why the Prem followed a global model echoed Blair policies is IMO not true. Blair came in in 97, a good 5 years after the Prem. The Prem had already started to sell its rights all over the world to the highest bidders, including domestically BKSYB.
The central premise though that some of these investors/owners are becoming too big to fail or prosecute is spot on.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Thanks for that.

Although I can't say I have ever been a fan of JW.

I'm surprised he didn't bring up the possibility of big clubs taking a fresh look at a European (or larger) Superleague.

If there's one thing people like "a deputy prime minister of Abu Dhabi, the public investment fund of Saudi Arabia, a billionaire based in Monaco for tax reasons and a disappointing assortment of investors and private equity funds" have in common it's that they don't like being constrained by rules meant for the little people.

Exactly, it's quite pleasing to see City stuff them at Anfield after all their sanctimony the last few weeks.

Would be funny if City win the league by miles and it ends up not counting.

Lolz it's 0-3 now.

Haven't read that yet, FDC, but I've read loads of his books and loved them all.

Also, the podcast "It Was What It Was", the football history podcast he co-presents with Rangers' and AKUTRs' own Rob Draper is staggeringly good and great fun.

I have never known such a mess in my life. What an odd event yesterday's match was. Fans, players and coaching staff feeling the backlash of something that began when Nico O'Reilly (for example) was 4 years old.

It's just such a completely bizarre situation. What have they even cheated? Financial rules which were clearly put in place to stop clubs like them, Newcastle, Villa and God forbid - clubs even lower than those three with the temerity to try to challenge the top table. Most fans don't even agree that the rules that they've broken should exist.

If anything it actually proves the point many have made about FFP / PSR and any such future iteration; they're only there to preserve the status quo.

Of course whether you believe in the rules or not, there's no defending cheating as turning a blind eye obliterates any such chance of fair competition and leaves the competition with absolutely no repute or consequence, which is exactly how that game of football yesterday evening felt; irrelevant.

Like so many others have asked over the last 15 / 20 years, why oh why can't the financial rules around football spending simply dictate that all committed future outgoing funds just lie in escrow? Would that make billionaires less likely to want to spend so frivolously? Maybe but isn't / shouldn't that be the aim of any competition rules based around finances? They should only ever exist to protect a community asset.

I've no idea what happens now. It's basically f****d. I just can't see any resolution. I guess this actually happened years and years ago but the Premier League is not a legitimate competition anymore. It's no better than an Infantino or Blatter vehicle. The really amazing thing is they managed to do it to themselves.

I suppose the original idea behind UEFA's original set of rules- now much amended- was to stop clubs overspending and wages getting out of control. That went well.

A document that Man City produced to try to decrease potential payouts around sexual abuse by Barry Bennell.

"The sheer volume of victims / survivors affected by abuse by Bennell when at Man City (or clubs related to Man City) was so huge (potentially hundreds) that City feared, if they all went to court, they could face massive damage payouts (tens or 100s of £m).

So City set up their own compensation scheme for men whose careers were effectively ended in their teens via trauma of sexual abuse and rape by Bennell.

Many survivors took the compensation money City were offering, on the basis that City as a club took a "no fault" position and were not liable because Bennell never had a formal contract with the club. That compensation was generally in the thousands of pounds.

I was given, by several survivors, a copy of the compensation agreement that survivors were obliged to sign. This include a "tariff" of money they would receive, from £5,000 from one incident of "indecent touching" to £65,000 for years of multiple rape by Bennell.

Lots of victims / survivors who came into contact with Bennell during their association with MCFC accepted these payouts. 8 didn't, deciding instead to take City to the High Court, NOT for more cash but in an attempt to get City to accept some liability for BB's actions.

I was approached by a law firm acting for abuse victims to do some work on this case, which I did, pro bono. The victims lost the case on a technicality because Bennell was never contracted to City.

But City's lawyers called Bennell - jailed five times for sexual offences against boys in different countries - as a witness in their case. His sentences included for offences involving abuse of those 8 eight men. He testified against them, via video from prison.

Barry Bennell gaslighted victims of his abuse from prison, via video, at the behest of City's lawyers."

That all sounds very reasonable.

But if the rules are so obviously unfair and uncompetitive (and I agree with you that they are), why didn't the City owners use their enormous wealth and access to razor sharp lawyers to challenge the legality of those rules instead of trying to cheat their way around them?

I suspect the answer is that the City owners are quite happy with those rules, just as long as they could find a way to force their way into the little circle of elites and then use those same rules to keep everyone else down.

So for me it rings a little hollow when City fans are bleating online about how unfair the rules are. They were perfectly happy with them when they thought they were working in their favour!
