Another win another clean sheet and another "team" Performance

Still early days but I think Matos has something.....watching the inside Swans video gishows hin as a leader especially the way he addresses the staff at Fairwood.
Watching him with KoL,Joey and Leon at the end of tonight and Saturday says amlot about him to me.
He has arrived and due to circumstances beyond his control is without his staff but is getting on with the job no toys out of prams and is doing all he can to unite everyone.

In a short while he has taken a squad of crap players (according to some) and git them playing as a team and though tonight wasnt pretty there were like Saturday glimpses of what can be we created opportunities and when attacking we seem to get at least 4 persons in the box.

Stiffer challenge Saturday I will take a point right now.
Interesting that whilst Key was "fit" for tonigjt he didnt start and Kasey was preferred as sub as we switxhed to 3-5-2 or 5-4-1 to see the game out .....using Ronald as right wing back.

As said its still early days but it looms like maybe this person with onky 12 ganes in the Potugese 2nd league might be another discovery and after alk thats 12 more games than Tosh,Jan Molby,Martinez had had .....oh and more than Garry Monk when he replaced Laudrup when things were deemed to be going awry in thw PL at least the others were "risked" when we were in lower leagues.

Lets all get behind the lads a week Friday whatwver Saturdays result fill the stadium and be the 12th man

That wasn't a great game and first half was poor. Second half momentum was building and Cullen did what he didn't do on Saturday and used his natural finishing boots. Peach of a goal. Eom Galbraith and Stamenic deserve a pat on the back.

First half felt a bit frantic, we had individuals trying to press on their own! Second half we pushed up.a bit and were better organised when closing them down. We got better going forward as the game went on.

Ronald drops deep again and does a job as we go five at the back to hold onto the lead to make it two wins in a row.
Throw ins going down the line to keep pressure off us and keep us further up the pitch. Makes you think we should be doing more often as an alternative instead of going backward to invite pressure.
They played five players high up the pitch which many teams have done successfully but we block the paths to their two inside forwards got tight to their wingers and looked a stronger defensive unit. They made it easier to cope with them by only using their trouble some winger as their preferred path to attack as previously mentioned, Galbraith outstanding again shutting the winger down.

Cullen's space for his goal actually came from an over hit pass to Yalcouye which caught their defence out of position, the point should be let's have more balls into feet higher up the pitch.gettimg the ball anywhere near the box with runners can cause chaos.
People complain about Ronald's crossing of the ball but the pull back he made we had all three players on the back post but no-one pull off the defenders and yet for Eom's early cross three waiting deep and no-one on the back post.

Getting the ball forward quickly to feet is opening teams up with the ball over the top or in the channels think we will see better timed runs soon effort if we continue to use alternative tactics , would like to see as we compete aerially to long kicks we get players around our players challenging for the ball.nice to see Vipotnik using a one touch pass with his back to goal to space in behind defenders for our other forwards moving forward to come onto.
Nice strike by Cullen, nice to see us not throwing leads away and glad to have picked up six points.

Thing with that is, for both the goal yesterday and the one he ballooned on Saturday, he gets into those positions.

That’s something that neither Idah nor Vipotnik managed in a combined 180 minutes. They may well be better finishers, but the hard part is finding the space to be able to shoot. Widell had half a chance in the first half, but again doesn’t (yet) have the off ball nous to ghost into clear shooting positions.

Will probably never be popular with fans, but will keep getting picked.

Thats correct but some people dont notice the defensive off the ball work that he does, all the think is that wingers should just be taking full backs on.

Yes, agreed.

He doesn’t have Eoms talent, but he puts a hell of a shift in and helped Galbraith (who was excellent out of position) deal with their most dangerous player.

Even trusted as a makeshift RB towards the end

You don't like Cullen that's fine. But he is a model professional playing for club and country. Totally dedicated, doesn't complain, not overpaid and just gets on with his job and commits 100% to the club. Last seasons top scorer under difficult management. We should be thankful he plays for us, sometimes we over analyse the players we buy when the talent is actually here.

I can think of a few players I'm "thankful" to have. He's not one of them.

Sorry, but model professional or otherwise, he's nowhere near good enough for a team with ambitions of exiting the division in an upward direction. Just like Oli Cooper. Overall when he came on he struggled to impose himself, like he usually does. Not good enough as a striker, not good enough as a midfielder.

The occasional goal like last night doesn't and won't change that.

I was more critical of him than most after Saturday but last night was much better. Markedly more decisive in possession and less prone to dallying.

The blood and thunder stuff is all well and good and will get people all excited, but if he's going to be in that role, setting the tempo of our play, then he needs to show more than just that he's up for a tackle.

Last night he did.

I can't ever see him being prolific for us, and as a result not a regular starter, but he's still a decent squad player to have on the bench and bring on to try to either change a game or see a result out. He can play a variety of roles, so until we bring in better, he's a welcome and useful squad member for me.

Yeah we get it - you don’t like Vipotnik.
I believe Matos will finally get into the players heads and provide him with the ammunition he needs - balls to run onto on the floor between either full back and Centre halves. Then he’ll do what he does best - blast the ball past the keeper with either foot.
Different players have different methods but if you are implying that Cullen is a better player than either Vipotnik or Idah youre just being overly sentimental. If we could get decent money for him I’d sell.

Cullen is not a number 9 so can't be compared to Vipotnik or Idah, he's a midfielder who had to play up front last season because on form we didn't have anyone better. Cullen scores mostly when finding space breaking from midfield, not with balls played up to him in the box. Without a doubt Vipotnik is better this season but won't score most games that's the law of averages. If he's a 15 goal a season striker one in three would be his average and that should be fine for us. We need to persevere with Idah but for how long I don't know. We all hope Matos can get him scoring regularly, but at the moment I don't think he was a good buy and certainly wouldn't start him.

Cullen was only ever a striker for us until Bellamy played him as a 10 for Wales last season.

2 wins on the bounce without too much of a change of our current system, you cant do much more than that...onwards and upwards and will still take time to evolve the game plan. If we can pick up more points during this transitional period I will be delighted.

A few niggles remain however with a few players that I just cant see adding much value to things going forward even with a new system and tactical plan.

Ronald - Yes he works hard but in reality offers us absolutely nothing going forward at this level, cant beat a man, cant cross, no attacking threat and always on his arse looking for fouls. If we are going to improve as a side we need to find a better solution as that right side is now looking like our biggest weakness. League 1 standard at best, premier league not a chance.

Idah - Daylight robbery for £6m, Celtic must be delighted with the deal.

Franco - Undoubtabely a good player but looks absolutely shattered and has offered very little of late, looks like he would benefit from a rest IMO.

Positives - Stamanic, Wedells inclusion and the new defensive shape with Galbraith on the right side.....suddenly we have a good defensive base to build from which is credit to Matos for making the change so quickly.

We gave Murphy too much time and space on the ball first half last night , he put quite a few crosses in and we were luckily able to deal with them , everyone where I was sitting was asking the same question, why weren’t we marking him tighter ,second half was better but we can’t keep standing off wide players like that
I think we have to start Zan every game, he brings players into the game more and is always looking to get a shot away
Eom did well again and so did the midfield

I think it's worth considering using Franco and Yalcouye almost in a job share arrangement. One starts, and the other comes on around the 60 minute mark. Both are terriers and can run themselves into the ground knowing that we have an alternative on the bench.

All about getting points now after months of dross
Vitor seems to be real prospect
I think he will go far
He’s made changes and is learning every game
We haven’t been doing that

As I’ve stated , Stamenic will be a key player

It was brilliant to scrape the win last night, firstly because it was a 6 pointer, secondly because Portsmouth deserved to lose - time-wasting from minute 1, getting in the ref's ear from minute 1 (and he clearly fell for the trap) and seemingly wanting the draw from minute 1.

It was low quality affair in general apart from a few good moves from the Swans and a couple of good chances for Pompey (Vigs was MOM again across most stats websites). Defence was great and seems Matos has prioritised to good effect plugging the holes in the leaky colander.

Good to see Widdell given his chance in central midfield but he needs to show more for me - just lacking a bit of something and has a slight "headless-chicken" quality about him.

Cullen did what subs should do - make an impact. If he can do that 1 game in 2 or 3 then he is worthy of his place in the squad. I have no personal love for the guy, but it never hurts to retain players who would bleed for the badge - arguably we would replace Cabango too as he's not a PL quality defender but the same applies. Those two (and Fulton ironically) are the last real legacy-DNA of the club.

Totally agree about Ronald and have said so on numerous occasions in here.

However, what I saw last night was when he had the ball at times, second half especially, he had three defenders with him. Why, I don’t know as he can’t really get the better of a one-on-one. But in these moments, with two extra men marking him, there will be gaps elsewhere which we need to be prepared for and exploit.

At the moment there seems to be a (misplaced?) aura about him backed up by the commentators saying how good a player he is - though they did say he’s not PL standard. Let’s exploit this before he’s found out completely!

i said it the other day, i would try him running at the defence through the middle, CD defenders dont like forwards running at them, just look at Eoms run in the 2nd half .
